Weird problem with my ST185

Postby eViLoNe » Sun Sep 21, 2008 11:35 pm

Well, this problem has just presented itself over the last 3 days or so.

If I hit a decently sized bump in a road, or a cats-eye at decent speed, my car loses all power, it actually acts like the cars starving itself of fuel. It only does it until I release the accelerator, and then re-apply, and it works fine again.

I was thinking of a dodgy sensor, or even sensor connection, but just wanting some input before investigating the entire car :P.

TPS possibly? Would suit the symptoms, especially if 'resetting' the tps (e.g backing off) brings it right again.

Yeah, it's strange. I noticed tonight, even if I don't back off, itll gain power back again in about a second after it happens, just seems like fuel starvation of some sort. It's starting to bug the shite out of me.

I've checked my battery cable running through the car to rule the positive out, that seems fine (battery in boot), but I didn't manage to check out the earth. I'll have a look at that a little later.

I'm starting to run out of ideas :\

not just your battery earth, check for the various earths in the engine bay-youll see them around bolted to the body. also look for burned or melted terminals-sign of a crap connection. we had a RX7 at work today, rough running fault came up with two codes (air temp and speed sens) replaced one earth cable, prob gone

Alright cheers, I'll take a look at that shortly. I'll also check my codes too, just to see if it's throwing any up.

yeah good idea, if its an intermittent fault and its coming with a sudden movement of the body, it should be a connection fault. maybe water in a plug even? thats caused me problems before

Yeah, good point. I changed the radiator over recently, so I'll check its sensor and pipes.

Only error code being thrown up is 51, gunna search up on that shortly to figure out what it is.

Edit; Just checked out code 51, looks to be Switch Condition Circuit, which is related to A/C and also TPS, so there might lie my problem

Hehe, unlikely. I'm betting on my TPS. Now I've just got to find out where it is in this bastard of a engine bay :D

Yup, I found it after a lot of investigating in the dark :D.

I mucked around with the connection a bit, and the car seems to be running a lot better now, which is a bonus. I'll keep an eye on it though. Worst case scenario is a new TPS.

Didn't look to bad. Didn't have a major look at it though, as it was dark outside, and I only had torch light.

I'm going to investigate further tomorrow night after work when it's still reasonably lit up.

Yeah, I'll be checking all that. I'll also be checking the battery cable from the boot, right up to the end point in the engine bay. I have a feeling that's causing me a wee bit of troubles also, who knows.

Hehe, indeed. Was in the boot when I bought it. Haven't had a problem with it yet, but I'm still keen on checking it out for myself to make sure shit was done properly, :P, I'm a bit over anxious when it comes to things like that.
