Check as in take them out? No.

We had someone thats rebuilt engines before take a look at it, and he reckons it was a blown head-gasket. Theres no movement in them, and bores are all smooth.

There's only one way to check pistons, that's to take them out. A blown headgasket won't usually be enough to pressurise the sump.
It takes quite a lot of KKKKKs to screw the bore.

as above, the bores may look perfect. the pistons wont move around any more than usual. the rings will still be intact. but 1 or more ring lands can have section broken out of it. rings will hold the broken part in place.

symptoms: alot of blow by. down on a cylinder at idle. may start to run on all cylinders when engine has load revs on it. bugger all compression in the broken cylinder,

i'd be taking them out, isnt hard if you allready have the head off.
