Replacement Discs for AE86...

Why are these things so fugging expensive ???

Is there anywhere in NZ that you can buy replacement discs that
don't cost an arm and both legs ?? Don't really care if they are
slotted/drilled/dimpled/pimpled/spindled/brindled or bling... just want
reasonable quality new discs to go with a decent set of new pads !!!

And that's another thing... why are decent pads so fugging expensive ??

Do they fly across from Aussi in a first class seat or something ?
Sure, I don't want those ones made from used photocopier powder
and sawdust. But I also don't need JDM pads in a puke inducing pastel
shade, made from surgical quality carbon-kryptonite

If anyone knows a local shop that does a sensible deal on a full set
of discs and pads for a Jap Spec AE86... post it up please

what do you mean by decent?

i've always found lucas pads to be plenty of braking for street cars, and pretty affordable.

Retail on TGP rotors is much the same as their calipers. Lucas/TRW do a stock replacement rotor for AE86's, I think they're all of $50 each

The rears are the pricest

i just got aw11 ( or ford telstar rears ) rear disc's thro the missis at repco for $20 and got the re drilled to 4 x 114.3
they have the same hat off set etc just a bigger dia

and for the front i used nissan bluebird u13 discs and got the hub milled out by 1.5mm

should also say that i pissed around with new caliper mounts etc to get everything to fit
still alowes you to run with 14" rims to so still get to keep that smooth jdm look

just got to sit down with a brake disc book and look at the dia of diff car brands
most will do the trick

for example one disc maybe 260mm dia and the other disc for another brand will be 258mm with all the correct pcd etc that 2mm will not effect anything

I have PM'd for TGP prices on rotors, and would look at replacing the
calipers also, if the price is reasonable. Bendix pads have always worked
fine for me, but I quite like the idea of going to something more in the
Mintex/Ferodo line for a bit more braking power.

Always nice to have more brakes than you need

i inquired about new AE86 calipers for my 85 when i first got it, at the time only one was available in NZ, and it was $800. the guy said they would probably be able to do a deal on that single caliper, but because the other side would have to come from japan it would be non-negotiable.

guess it all depends on your defintion of reasonable but would be far better off getting calipers reconditioned, which is pretty affordable - or upgrading to something bigger.

yeah the calipers are not cheap, deals can be done ex japan
i think we did some calipers are $250 each
not much point really.

i guess it depends what you get with the caliper, but considering AE86 brake setups seem to go for $400+ secondhand $250 a side could be semi reasonable.

still better getting something bigger for that kind of money imo.

I think when I priced calipers they were something like $450 a side More expensive than Wilwoods!

They do rotors & Bendix pads. Ask for a good price

i got some performace slotted rotors for my ae86 from znoelli.com bloody awsome and the were only 330 for the two front, same diameter as factory. there were some cheaper cross drilled ones to for under 300

330 for the pair is a good price IMO, I would steer clear of anything cross drilled though.

BNT $300 for a set of four Brembo, plus $100 for a set of Bendix pads.
Discs can be slotted locally for $50-70/set on top of the buy price.

Mates rates, and hard to go past a deal like that
