New brakes!

Postby cat007 » Fri Sep 26, 2008 4:49 pm

WAHOO!

Picked up my Mintex 1166 pads from Race Brakes yesterday. Apparently these pads should even be able to stop 1650kg from 220kmph I'm told hahaha. Got nice fluid from them as well.

$367 later though - OUCH!

But hey - would cost more to hit the armco hehe

So - who's racing on the 4th? :)

Shouldn't most pads be able to do this... well, eventually anyway, maybe there is more to the description that just a weight and speed.

Errr yes, but I want them to do it over and over. Regular pads and fluid would explode if you attempted that lol

I had my 1166's glowing red, and smoke pouring out of the wheels after many many many many 100 to 10k stops as hard and fast as I could. Brakes still working strong.

Incidentally, that's the bedding in process and is highly amusing.

However ... lay in a stock of brake discs, and wheel cleaner.

You're going to be needing to wash your wheels every 100meters, and if you're racing much, and my car is anything to go by, you will get through at least three sets of front rotors during the life of the pads 8)

If you run those pads I would suggest running brake ducting!!!

I ran these pads, they are SOFT, my brakes got way to hot and that was 2 laps around Taupo. Smoking heaps, cracked the pads cos they got too hot.

I had previously run them in till brake fade on the road.

But just beware :)

I think it must depend on the power of the car ... in my rather more standard car, I thrashed the living shit out of the brakes on Manfeild, and they worked perfectly all day every day without even the slightest hint of fade.

I fine it a bit strange you say they are soft bazz. Everyone i know that runs them, probably close to a dozen people, say they eat brake rotors like they're going outta fashion. Now to me that says that the pads are very hard, harder than the disc, hence they eat the disc and the pads are very slow wearing.

They eat the pads cos they have alot of metal content in them.
They get alot of bite because of this.
you can tell the material in it is soft as the brake dust is crazy.

Dont get me wrong they are def a good pad :)

Remember you can get 2 types 1166 and 1144.

Running Ferodo DS2(somethings ~$220 odd i think) in my aw11 up front, seem to be a pretty good balance for everyday driving and the odd track-day/club event.
Don't need any heat in them for stopping on the road straight off the bat.
Used with Penzoil Dot4 racing fluid ~$70/L (all from race-brakes)

Have not tried the mintex to compare but I am getting some fairly good milage out of these Ferodos I think... how many K's does everyone average with there XX pads. (And used how)
Be interested to know what sort of legs the mintex have.

/boy its time for bed

the g/f had 1166's in her road car, and I think she got something like 50,000 out of them. But, that was road car use. My old club car got about four years on them, but I'm not sure how many km that amounted to.

wow the must be making it from diff stuff, when my dad used them for racing they only lasted a few meets.

He also said as they got older they lost its grip and were use less lol.

So he then went to a ferodo DSXXXX and they worked the best he recons.

But not we dont use std type pads cos we upgraded to wilwoods etc and got MUCH better braking performance :D

They work fine on my car, but I bin them when they wear to approx half the original thickness, I found they just aren't as good after that point
