Replacing K50 with T50 in AE85

Postby Stealer Of Souls » Tue Oct 07, 2008 10:18 am

Ok...
I've just spent the last hour trawling the forums and I can't find the answers I'm looking for.

Basically, my latest K50 has died. And I've decided it's high time I got my T50 into my car.
It is an AE85 with 4AGE and T series rear end.
I have the T50 with A series bellhousing (fingers crossed it's actually a 22 spline as was advertised... Dumby didn't check when he bought it), clutch fork, hydraulic clutch pedal, master and slave cylinders.
I need to sort out clutch lines, gearbox crossmember and driveshaft.

What I would like to know is...

Can I use my K50 gearbox crossmember in any way for the change?
Is my existing one piece AE85 driveshaft of any use?

I realise the easiest way would be to get the proper bits, but I just can't seem to find any without having to sell a kidney.

existing driveshaft will only work if you have purchased a 20-spline T-50.
TT14# corona driveshaft bolt up or find a 22-spline yoke and get it welded to existing.
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin

Sell a kidney and do it properly? You only need 1.

hahaha.. true...
Nah. I'm not interested in dodgy, but would like to recycle where possible...
I don't mind paying the price to do it right, as long as the price is reasonable. E.G. I wouldn't pay $250 for a K50.. that's robbery...

Such robbery..

I paid $50 each for the two I killed... and had a spare from a donor car... until I had to sell the car...

Hmmm...
Sooo... According to my WOF guy, if I have to modify the crossmember to fit the box, then I should have a Cert for it....
Can anyone confirm that both he and I are thinking of the same thing.... At this stage I don't want any hassles with WOFs, and this guy knows my car, and all the mods that have been done to it. So basically I don't get hassles from retarded VTNZ people who don't really know the rulebook.

And on another note, if anyone has a AE86/T50 gearbox crossmember, could they possibly take a pic and do some measurements for all the bolt holes...
I have a sneaking suspicion that I have a crossmember sitting in my pile of bits... only problem is I have no idea if it's a AE85/K50 or AE86/T50 crossmember...

Lastly, speedo drive for K50 Vs T50.... are they the same ratio?

Yes you need a cert for the modified crossmember.

If you cut, weld, or heat the crossmember and modify its shape from factory you need cert.

Check the LVVTA website under Engine and Drivetrain conversions, Section 2, 2.4

Everything else is already certed...
I don't wanna pay $400 just to cert a crossmember when I can potentially buy one that fits...

So what about drilling new points/slotting original bolt holes.. I would assume that that counts as modification..... Supposedly that's all I need to do...

Need to redrill the holes in the middle cos k50 ones are too far apart. If you welded up the old holes, grinded them flat and painted them no one could tell its modified.

The 2 outter holes just need slight slotting, can't even tell.

Its pretty straight forward.

Cheers man. I might have a chat to "the man" he might be able to sort me out without alerting the boss... lol...

But seriously, that's good. Pretty straight forward.... I'm having to get my usual garage to do it for me because I don't currently have the space (or time) to deal with it myself.... I'll talk to him and see what he says...

Thanks again for the info.

Not a great pic but I didn't feel like jacking the car cup :P. A bit different then the 85 one, 2 bolts at each end to bolt to the chassis and a slot for the speedo cable to go through.

Cool.
Looks like I'm in luck.. I had a crossmember floating around in the unlabelled box of unlabelled bits...
Guess I didn't need one after all that...
Thanks for the help guys.

Hmmm.. new development... Well new question.

Speedo cable.. what did everyone do? Is there an extension piece for the AE85 cable? or are they different?
