Landcruiser options?

Postby TRD_ZERO » Sun Oct 05, 2008 3:23 pm

A friend of mine's 1985 lx landcruiser has started knocking so this will give him the opportunity to do an engine conversion/swap. He was thinking along the lines of something that wont need alot of modification thats almost a straight drop in and will bolt to his gearbox. Anyone have any ideas?

Is the LX a 2.4 or 3.4 diesel or the 2F petrol jobbie?

If its a diesel - easiest thing is to stick with the 13bt (not the rotary - the 3.4 deisel turbo lol) and run a bit more boost, bigger exhaust and possibly an intercooler. You can turbo a 3b (NA 3.4 diesel) pretty easy too.

If its petrol - there aren't any easy conversion that I can think of but common ones are the 1UZ lexus v8 and the holden 3.8 v6's, but they all need custom engine mounts and transfer case adaptors.

Mine is running the holden motor and the transfer/gearbox adaptor alone was $1200. Good torquey motors though and CHEAP

I put an EFI LT1 chev in my old cruiser, went damn well and Id recommend spending the extra effort going EFI at current (and future) gas prices...

1UZs are great motors but I decided on an LT1 cause they have a little more horsepower but LOADS more torque and torque is the name of the game in a cruiser. Having paid 4x as much for the injected chevy though in hindsight I wonder whether a 1UZ with a supercharger kit would have been the go... Only draw back is added complexity which offroad isnt really the go but those motors are so strong wouldnt have been an issue I imagine...

Could just run a blow through carby oldschool styles.

My work mate has a LT1 in his Holden Ute and has headachs with tuning with the dizzy at the back of the head.

I managed to pick up my 1UZ for $950 including loom, Gbox, driveshaft yoke, dizzies, alterator, PS, aircon and engine mounts. So they are very cheap.

But yea good luck with the LT1, still rad hearing V8 land cruisers canning around.

LT1 has the dizzy or 'optispark' at the front of the engine, but i figure we are talking about the same LT1 (there is also an old 70's carby one) since the dizzies have been known to cause trouble. The main thing with 1UZ again is they dont produce that much low down (for a 2-ton+ vehicle with heavy drivetrain big tyres etc), great on the highway with the revs up but not so good for torqueing out of a mudpit at 2k rpm...
