Brake caliper cleaning.

Postby Quint » Tue Oct 14, 2008 2:22 pm

rebuilding a set of calipers as they were stuffed, just need to know the best way of cleaning the actual caliper pot.

Was thinking of sandblasting them but i'm unsure as to how much meat this would take off the walls as i don't want to take to much off IE. honing. They are cast so i dunno what the effects would be, if anyone has rebuilt brakes and knows the best method, let me know, cheers.

scrub ?
If you tape up all the pistons and sliding surfaces you could glass bead them?

After tossing up the options i sand blasted a 'dummy' pot first (just a rusted POS i had laying around) and when no damage was done (could still feel the machine markings on the inside of the pot) i did my good ones.

Came up very very good, very surprised infact, so for others,

sandblasting cast iron brake pots is the method to use.

Acesniper, rebuilding the brakes so they are completely disasembled.
Scrubbing wouldn't get into the tight grooves where the piston seals inside the pot.
