Corolla replacement engine options?

Postby Markus » Sun Oct 19, 2008 7:54 pm

I have a EE103 Corolla Wagon (Same shape as AE101) with a 5efe that has blown the rings and bearings, and needs replacing. I figure a 5afe or 4afe is more common and easier to find, but from reading other posts it looks like E block and A block mounts are different. Is that right?

Would a 4efe fit without having to change computer and loom.

Or if I don't want to do much changing stuff should I just stick with trying to find a 5efe?

Finally, anyone know of a 5efe for sale? (or one of those others if they will fit easy?)

Thanks

I am putting an A series engine into my ee80 corolla. If you are after an easy project this is not it. You will need new mounts as the e and a series motors do not share the same.

If I was you i would look at getting another 5efe, or even a 5efhe (there is one on trademe atm). Could even look at a 4efte if you are that way inclined.

If its a project car this could be then turbo'd using 4efte parts as most things in the e series range can be interchanged. This is tried and true for some decent gains.

If its just a daily, then you can stick with the stock motor. A 5efhe would be great, has a bit more guts to it with higher comp pistons and different cam profiles.

If I hadnt already purchased all my 4AGE gear I would be going down this 5efhe turbo route.

Thanks for that. This car is totally just a daily. Its not worth doing much to.

The one on trademe comes without most of the parts (or for extra $), so I was wondering if I could just bolt up all my intake, ps, ac pumps, etc to it?

Is there anything else I'd need to change to run the 5efhe?

I guess a 4efe would be more work to right?

Pretty sure all the ancillaries such as alternator etc would be sweet. Not sure if there would be an issue running the 5efe ecu on a 5efhe. If it purely a daily just get a 5efe. Saves opening another money pit.

For engine search purposes 5e's came in sera's cynos's & tercel's besides corolla's.

I know for sure there's a 5E-FE at Mangere pick a part at the mo, and there's usually one or two floating around there so shouldn't be too difficult to find!

im preety sure a 4efte would fit and would go hard too  alternatively a 5e-efhe would be a good conversion, or a 5e-fe, 4e-fe, 4a-fe, 7a-fe or 4age would fit i think?

A series wont fit on the stock mounts, and anything other than a 5EFE would require a little work.

Definately 5EFE if straight replacement, 4EFTE if wanting a bit more power.

Awesome, thanks. The guy selling the 5efhe said the loom and all the ancilliary parts will bolt straight on, so thats ok.

Just need to know if ECU will run it fine, or maybe then I'd need to get the 5efhe ECU?

Pickapart sounds next best option.

If you are going to use the 5efhe, get the ecu aswell. It has an aci-s manifold, which is different to the 5efe manifold.

Alternatively, you could just use the 5efe manifold.

4efe would bolt in, but would go like poooooo'sss  , being a 1300

Ok, so if I use my manifold, my ECU would be fine?

But if I could get the 5efhe ECU, would it go straight on to my loom?

Yes, intake manifold.

The ecu, Im not 100% sure. If you get all the 5efhe gear and it doesn't plug in, its always possible to make it work.

If its just your daily and you don't want to spend, get the 5efe from PaP, only $306. Will be the easiest and cheapest. Just check for obvious signs if wear and cracks/leaks before you buy it. Check the plugs are still in, so the engine hasn't filled with water. Take the rocker cover off and check for build-up.
