Most dumb thing / worst thing youve done to a car

Postby neo » Mon Oct 20, 2008 12:45 pm

Having a little ponder the other day..

What’s the most stupid thing you have voluntarily done to a car.

To start things off:

In my first car I wired the spotlights up using good old 6 strand solid core telephone wiring. This lasted about a year until I was working on the car and the wires caught fire. Those wires are still probably melted up behind the dashboard today.

Couldn't be bothered looking at a manual for how to get rear bumper off my corolla. Tried to undo it bu reaching underneath. Got p1ssed off and hacksawed it off. Then saw the mounts and the bolts under the rubber grommits in the boot...

Edit To add to my list:

Stopped in a queue of traffic at the lights only to get rammed up the rasshole by some lady driver admiring her new office building that she was supposed to be starting at that very morning. My car got written off. Should have hopped into the other lane.

Then gave my mags to my mum - she had same car - cos they were the wrong offset for my new one.

Front left is now in a sorry state!

FUNNY STORY: When the cops showed up etc, some chick was driving past, apparently she had just that morning picked up her vw golf from the panelbeater, she was rubbernecking at the crash scene and then plowed into the back of the car in front. Another two write offs. The car transport guys from Onehunga loved it, said they went from no jobs to off the chain!! And all in one spot

Going back a few cars... but my first Hillman Avenger, had a leaking windscreen and no money to fix it, so I drilled a hole or four through the floor(front and back of each foot well), straight through the fuel line(s).

Got really drunk and trampolined on the bonnet of a cop car in town, till the cops walked round the corner

Tried a temporary exhaust hanger fix on a mates car. Tied it up with zipties, turned out to be very temporary

Used exhaust cement to hold in some mesh in my front kit when I first got it..... thought it was aweseome stuff as it set so hard on the exhaust....

I guess the kit lacked the heat required to set the cement though so next time it rained the mesh fell out

Have broken waaay to much stuff on my starlet trying to 'fix' things. All good lessons learnt however 8) 100% chance i'll break more stuff in the future too.

left car sitting for 6 months.naturally was stubborn to start.
loaded up the intake with engine start/ether , and that got it sparking but not firing. loaded up intake with another half can of ether.
it fired into life, but the timing was out by a bit. it blew a fireball out into the engine bay and almost caught the fuel return line

took so long to get all the dry powder out of the engine bay, theres still some caked on around the manifold too.

the real life mechanic helping me (he actually posts on these boards sometimes) then informs me that he burnt down a whole car and garage pouring fuel down the throat of a carbed monster a similar way.

Had a 90 degree brass tee then going into a t junction for oil gauge and factory oil pressure light. Needless to say it was too much weight with the vibrations etc. Thred snaped off in the head. Was easy enough to get out...well once I had taken water hose etc off. (Coolent change on SW = not fun) Lucky I noticed the large pool of oil on the ground

Drained the fuel tank on my starlet using that handy GIANT drain plug. I jacked the car up and had the big fuel drum under there with my funnel.
The funnel had a hole the size of a 5cent piece in the bottom. The hole in the fuel tank was WAY bigger. I took the drain plug out and proceeded to drop it in the funnel. Fuel going everywhere!!! I got the plug out but the funnel kept overflowing cause it was too small. I think I spilled about 2L of petrol on the garage floor.
I turned off the garage power and went in the house for a while

decided to over take in the wet, in town, going fast in a '82 datsun 280z........ thought it was a good idea, the power pole on the right side of the road didnt think so.

Also being 18, driving a 2l sss bluebird at speed on a gravel road that apparently is a dangerous peice of road, slamed on brakes like on seal, ending up in a bank on the other side of a drain

Both cars right offs
