Racing classes

Postby cat007 » Wed Oct 22, 2008 1:51 pm

hey all

Can someone point me in the right direction to find out what sort of racing classes there are for a 1500kg WRD car running a 1988cc turbo (single) engine?

I thought SS2000 but that's only for quite light cars :(

schedule A is is Motorsport NZ regs,
But right there is says you must have a cage,

Basically, if you want to race against other cars,
with more than 6 cars on the grid,
or more than a few laps at a time,

you need logbook, Rollcage, and a national Race liscence.

Many variables in that question i.e. Material used, design etc etc

But a ballpark figure would be $1500 plus

LOL of course you need a cage.

For small club sport events that auckland car club hold and northern car club you can run with a half cage.
This is prob what I will do some time next year.

SS2000 is pretty serious, and quite $ to run in that class.

if you have a cage then you need a race seat which means you need full harness belts. and you'll need rollcage padding.
Dont expect change from $2500 if its only 1 seat, or from $3500 if its 2 seats.

Dont skimp $$ on seats or harness.

rollcage + seats + harness + motorsport authority card + logbook = Whats you're life worth to you?

You do have to have a cage to run door to door in a proper race series.

I reckon you should run in some dual car sprint events before you jump into a proper series it is basically running door to door but not really and find someone who is basically the same speed as you and just get used to running close with another car.

dont forget in proper race classes you'll probably need a national race licence... maybe you should go do car club hillclimbs etc...?

If you haven't had a chance already, join a car club.

I started out doing part or all of a season of dual sprints (2 cars racing each other).
Usually no cage is required to do this.

Then you can work your way up to full field racing (up to 18 cars in some classes I have raced in).

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Such a difference to driving around the track on a test day - to actually competing hah!

I guess I'll have to save up for a cage - or seriously think about what car I want to use. I'd really love to use the MK3 Supra - but its just too heavy I think.....

I guess I might just do random testing days for fun - cant really afford to put a cage in the car - or more to the point, cant afford the repairs if i crash....
