link limp mode??

Postby d1 mule » Sat Oct 25, 2008 6:53 pm

hi, so iv recently brought a AE70 with a 4age and Link V5 computer, all was fine untill out of no where it decided it wouldnt start 95% of the time and when it did it runs really flat and mis-fires etc. that changed from it running mint to runnong shit was the battery was flatish, but since then its been balls.

iv replaced the coil, rotor, and dizzy cap to no avail.

so im left to thinking, do links have a limp mode???

thanks

ah $&#$%, it wasnt completely flat just not enough to get it going. the Map is still hooked up. ih has a kill switch which isolates th comp etc so i don think it would loose its tune

when it does run its SUPER rich and mis firing and masses of black smoke.

dont think this is possible, its written on. I had my battery flat for over a year and still had the tune when restarted.
links are very sensitive to low battery voltage and cut out at anything under 10V i think, so it will crank a bit, maybe splutter but then cut out when the voltage drops off a bit. same thing happened with my car, and i thought id lost the map too.

Well my Turbo GTZ has done the exact same thing. Nothing and I mean NOTHING changed on the car. I went to Malaysia for a month and the day before I left the car was running great. On return to NZ, I went to take the car for a drive and it just stalls and coughs and splutters. With any load on the motor, it'll just die on me. I can start it and rev it up slowly, but if I stab the gas or try driving it, it would cut out and die.
It's using a V5 Link as well.

We chucked the laptop on it and chucked more fuel (poo loads more) into it down low on the maps and it was then able to be driven.

So when I do get around to getting it retuned, I'll be storing a copy of the tune in my laptop, just incase this happens again.

have you checked timing? and check ALL the vacuum lines, everywhere. mine ran like that when a vacuum line fell off.

I reckon try a battery from another car that you know is good, you've got nothing to lose.

I had a similar issue and turned out to be a faulty distributor. was giving inconsistant signal voltage to ECU and causing it have intermittent spark.

The Link ECU stores all parameters for 20 or more years. You would need a seriously strong EMF or software to alter the tune.
I suspect you're having problems with trigger pickup. There is a thread on the Link website forums that covers this issue. From memory I think it was titled something like "link loosing memory" and the answer covered weak trigger signals, especially in low battery situations. (I just can't find the thread now)

i have seen this fault on both crampys car and ih8tec's car.

the battery goes flat and the link biffs the tune.

we could sit here and debate all day about why it shouldnt happen (because i know it shouldnt)

but the reality is that this is what happens with some of them.

go back to your tuner and get the map reloaded. keep a copy on a memory stick and leave it in your car.

problem sorted.

You you are stating that campy's map was wiped and that all zones are now factory defalut?
It's not a debate about how it should or should not happen. Its a debate on WHAT is happening. Little point in spending good money chasing a bollox fix based on a wrong assumption.
PC Link 3.35 files are 39kb.

That's a big negative.
My car was running well and then I headed off to Malaysia for a couple of weeks. Then when I got back home, the car won't run under low load, but would run well on boost, once it does spool up. It idles once I do get it started, if I manage to get it started.
We got the laptop hooked up to the link and saw the fuel map had a massive dip with just a little load on. It would cause the engine to cut out and cough and splutter. We (me and Deanis) pulled the dip right out of the fuel map and it ran a lot better like that, much easier too start. It would still miss, so put some more fuel in it and it goes a better. Still not ideal, but well enough to drive it to get it tuned.

The whole thing seems very odd.

not doubting you but seems very very odd to me.

my understanding is once information is written onto a chip like that it is there forever or until magnetic forces remove or alter it etc.

Yeah it is odd.
I may need to explore other avenues first, just to see what the story is.
It doesn't really bother me too much though, as the car is getting a new intercooler and some other stuff cleaned up (and some other secret little plans 8) ), so will be going in for a full retune once all that's done.
Might change the fuel pump as well, seeing as it's a factory one from what I've been told.

i had the exact same problem with my blacktop sr20det.. after running mint it was parked up.. first time i drove it it ran sweet, the next day didnt run so good then worse and worse as time went on.. for a while it ran mint for the first 5 mins then after that it started running like crap..

changed coil packs, plugs, spark plugs, ignitor, all with no avail.. when i changed all of the following it ran mint for about half an hour so thought it was fixed then it got worse again every time.. i checked the engine fuse once, it didnt look so great so i changed it (was running crap at that time) and with the new fuse it ran so mint, for about 2 hours, then fuxed out..

im getting to the end of my wits, still isnt running right.. have new fuel pump and fpr so will get those put it and re-tune it unless you guys can think of a better option? have checked all lines, pipes etc, all sweet..

on a side note, link shows voltage is only 11.4 volts under boost, but even when it drives mint it has that voltage..

its so bad now that after 30 mins of driving it becomes pretty much undriveable, even 1% throttle causes splutter and can't accelerate at all.. but park it up and leave it for half an hour to cool down it runs alright (still splutters etc but is driveable with minimal throttle)..

sorry to hi jack thread, just cos on same topic..

ps, got a new battery too, still the same..
