fuel cells

Postby fxgt race » Tue Oct 28, 2008 4:01 pm

After an interesting ss2000 taupo round the car is in need off some weight reduction. At the moment i have a standard fuel tank and need to run alot of gas for the pick up problems when the tank gets below 1/2.

With the car being a hatch back i take it that the cell would have to be totally inclosed in the spare wheel well.

Can these plastic cells be mounted under the car where the original tank is and a cover be put over the filler cap inside the car,do the cells need to be fully covered in under the car with a metal box or are they designed to be able to be mounted with the straps as they are.

Thanks

yes, the tank will need to be isolated from the cabin .
if the car is tarmac only, then the tank won't need a sheild around it, but is still a good idea to have one

weight reduction???
Dam, you gotta be 300kg less than me already!!
If you get any where near the minimum, you'll be closer to 500kg lighter than me!
And running slicks.

Man, I should buy a honda

The vast majority of fuel cells designed for motorsport use are designed to be housed in a metal case, hence the reason most manufactures actually make & sell metal cases for them. If it's inside the car it will need to be fully enclosed & the breather line will have to either be hardlined or metal braided hose check the MSNZ regs for the exact specs.

It pays to run a metal case round them as it stops them from getting punctured/worn away as well & sometimes the metal case can actually help strengthen the car up, or help to relocate other things down low & where you want them like battery etc.
