how long for fuel to evaporate?

Postby flygt4 » Thu Oct 30, 2008 9:16 pm

so...
attempting to drain a tank full of flat fuel from the tank via the fuel feed as toyota didnt see fit to put a drain bung on ae101 (not that i can find). had a blonde moment and neglected to block the other side of the fuel line to pressurise it . have dumped about 5 seconds worth of priming out the open return onto the back of the block.

how long until its safe to crank her over again?

aslong as its not still damp and you can't smell much vapour, should be fine. i've sprayed fuel all over my engine from a leak on the fuel rail before, just blew it over with the airgun to and started it up fine.

but have a fire extuingisher handy just incase...

lol going to abandon work for tonight anyway, car is pretty much sold so don't want to burn it down now.

can smell vapour very strongly  its right by the starter motor and pulleys too so plenty of chance to spark.

i'd just found why it wouldn't start too so mighta had it running tonight after a 6 month hibernation :x

fuel pump relay is mounted to the battery behind the rear seat, the spade connector for the control wire had come loose

it really hard to find motivation during the winter months or i would have found it a lot earlier, took me all of 5 minutes to find as soon as i heard it wasnt priming.

should be okay if you leave over night in a well ventilated area, as the fumes are the dangerous part. might pay to pour some water over affected area too

9 times outta 10 you would be fine but pays to be cautious with something as volatile as petrol vapour
