RedMist at offroad National Finals - Champion!!!

Postby KinLoud » Sat Oct 25, 2008 10:57 pm

Glenn (ezy10s) and I went to day one of the Offroad national finals.
What an absolute hoot! Mud, loads of 4ages, turbo 1uz, big v8's etc and also Daniel's turbo 350Z powered Jimco.
Awesome!
Daniel finished 1st in 2 races and 2nd in another... not sure about the first race... we were just arriving.
Helped clean loads of mud of the car in between races as well as watching all the other races!

Pics and video...

See Daniel nearly go end over end at the start of the second lap! Fark!!!

The endurance race is sunday, (160km) should be awesome!

Daniel drives car number 118, its red.
Look for the truck that he transports the car in - this might help you find him if you go along.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

RedMist wrote:Ken, was great seeing you out on Saturday. Sorry for the frantic activity around the car and the lack of personal time to describe the car and what was happening on the course.

It all worked out in the end..... I'm now the 2008 Off Road National Champion!

Nice work Dan!

I just had a play of this sort of stuff on Colin McRae: DiRT, and while it doesn't come close to the real thing, I can see why you love it!

It'd be awesome to see some in car stuff, but I imagine the camera would have trouble not being covered with dirt :D
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Cheers for the congrats gents. We had a fantastic weekend that really ended better than I could have expected.
Both Saturday and Sunday we spent time nursing the car while the temperature went above 130. Not a nice situation to be in, battling for the lead and having to short shift and keep off the accelerator.

The car has so much more potential. It demonstrated some serious arse spanking speed both days intermixed with short shifting.

Unfortunately no in car camera. We decided early that the cameras wouldn't last the blast from the start line so didnt install them. I also still haven't sorted the sound yet either, because there is no external mic they only pickup vibration from the chassis.. and sound shyte!

The good news is that although I wasnt racing with a Toyota power plant I spanked a 30k Honda engine and several developed SR20DET's.

The Jimco's in Dirt are slow and labourous. They do however depict the difficulty of controlling a high powered car on dirt well. We placed an anti sway bar in the back of the Jimco two weeks ago and it has truly transformed the car. The magic wand was waved and it turned from a rolly desert car to a darty short course car.

In a way I was glad that nobody ventured out on Sunday. It was so wet that the pace car (Nissan Patrol 4x4) didnt make it around the first corner. You can imagine what it was like for those of us in 2WD buggies. Funny thing was that by the end of the look lap most(if not all) of the 4x4 race trucks were stuck.

Saturday was almost as bad and Ken would have seen the frantic activity around the car attempting to get the 60 odd kgs of mud from each of the side pods. We kiwi engineered some barge plates out of the truck floor mats to try and deflect some of the mud for the last two heats. It worked, but not for long. Both intercoolers were submerged in mud and the fans that fed them had wiped their own blades off.

Ken, just watched the video on youtube.... That jump felt considerably worse than it looked on camera. I could have sworn that was it and I was about to meet roof with earth. In the fourth heat they ended up reshaping it which made it considerably easier to jump.
It's a pity that in the video you couldnt see the back jump. The car took off flat, sailed for 80 odd feet then landed on all four every time. Absolutely perfect place to pick off other compeditors where they could only jump half that distance.
I also didnt realise just how lazy the Nissan engine was. It sounds like it's just idling. I can't remember if I was short shifting in that round but it certainly sounds like I'm not even getting the thing up on boost!

I used to watch these when i was younger. But the terrain was a lot different, they would be on courses in and around reporoa (between taupo and rotorua) and would have huge dirt hill climbs. Over hilly farm terrain.

This must be the auckland version

Car looks wicked though 8)
