2jzgte mounting probs - help ! JZ guru's please

Postby docTRD » Thu Nov 06, 2008 6:59 pm

hey all, this afternoon i attempted to drop in my 2jzgte into my jzx91 mark2. the 2jzgte is from an aristo and is 1st gen.

1st attempt was using the factory 2jzgte alloy mounts on the block and the factory jzx91 rubbers (on the xmember). now as we were pusing the motor towards the firewall we could see that there was no way we could get the motor far enough back to sit on the studs on the rubbers, the engine is too close to the firewall.

secondly the alloy mounts are too deep from the engine block so the stud on the rubber and the alloy mount dont line up. i tried swapping over a jzx91 alloy mount on the passengers side and a jzx81 mount but they both dont push the motor forward enough. wat am i doing wrong or do i need new rubberrs/mounts? cheers for any help !!

I'm not sure on aristo alloy mounts, but your best bet would be to bolt up the factory jzx91 alloy mount brackets to the aristo block in the same location that the aristo ones came off (as the aristo afaik is also front sump) and use the jzx91 rubbers.

It can be a bit of a mission to get it all to line up, often its easier to swing the engine in without the rubber insulators and then suspend the engine above the cross member and have someone tilt it while you work the rubber insulators in. If you're putting the engine in with the gearbox in the car, this is an essential technique.

If you're putting the engine in without a gearbox in the car, probably still easier to do it this way anyway.

If you've still got your old motor there, the best way to be 100% sure about this is simple measure the distance from the back of the block to the engine mount on your old JZ and on the 2JZ-GTE.

yea man problem is I cant bolt the jzx91 alloy mount to the 2jzgte as on the drivers side the jzx91 mount places the motor quite far forward which is good but where the bolt hole is for the rubber insulator stud to come through will foul on the 2jzgte turbo assembly, this is stopping me from bolting the mount on. Any other thoughts?

Um Um Um... Gotta rack my brains here but I did the same swap on my old D1 JZX90..

Was factory twin turbo 2JZGTE from Aristo. I used JZX90 alloy mounts and rubbers..

Thats right, the turbo setup has a butterfly actuator or something that the mount fouls on? On the dump pipe? Maybe 3 bolt or something. I ditched that actually so the mount would fit. The 3 bolt dump pipe off the bottom may have even bolted up to where the butterfly thing was.
I also remember the rear turbo intake fouling on the clutch master but Im pretty sure I was able to just grind away a small section to clear it rather than make a new one.
Think that was about it. It was fast as f**k, considering it replaced a T04'd 1JZGTE on 15psi. Just the extra torque in the JXZ90 made it heaps better.

Good luck!!

yea man thats the one! the mount fouls on the cast turbo outlet pipe, so I could just remove it and maybe make something up from there so I can at least mount the motor 1st?! and yes the rear turbo is a bitch being so close to the firewall. the 2jzgte aristo mounts mount the motor way too far back so il try the factory jzx91 mounts on it and see how that goes. cheers man i hope it goes hard! sounds like it will hehe :)

hey brendan tried what you suggested with the jzx91 mounts and rubbers and the drivers side fits sweet but the passenger side mount is 100mm too far forward ! f#*k it. Also the motor is now sitting quite forward and theres a like 100mm gap behind the motor, cant fit the radiator and fan in the little gap in front of the motor!
dam ive tried everything aye. why is this such a misson?!!

Hmm, actually- check the mounting holes on the side of the block. Prob 6 holes you can bolt them on by which shifts mount forward or back by about 60mm. One of the combos will only bolt on by 3 bolts.
Definitely works though, just need to play with the combinations. I only had same parts that you have there. Sorry I cant remember exactly though!!

sweet cheers brendan, yea I saw theres 2 other bolt holes on plenum side of the motor but they look to be a smaller pitch and only 12mm not 14mm. are these the ones you mean? I tried with the aristo mounts and swapped them to opposite sides and the turbo side mount fits mint and the other I might just get a custom one, save shagging round in the end. Or i might just haveto put the 2j into my cressida ! hahah

hey all thanks for your help ! got the mounts sorted now, used the jzx91 ones and i found there was a more forward mounting position on the turbo side of the 2jzgte, sweet! moved the mount like 7cm forward so now they sit on the mounts sweet.
only problem is the rear turbo is hitting the brake master cyl! so what did u do brendan? bash the cylinder or shave the turbo housing or a bit of both? its quite tight by the firewall also. not as easy as cressidas to drop motors into thats for sure :p
