Tyre fitting and balancing

Postby cat007 » Thu Oct 30, 2008 7:18 pm

Hey guys,

A rather good friend of mine, who fits his own race bike tyres, has said he can fit my slicks to my rims without any hassle - however he cant balance them.

Question's are these. Are balanced wheels really that important?

If so then......

Is there anyone here that lives in Auckland who can fit and balance tyres? *wink wink* :)

if there is a big imbalance you will find that over even 50kph there will be a vibration in the steering which gets worse as speed increases.

i have unbalanced tyres on my hack and at 100kph my hands look like jelly, i have no power steering though, that would dampen it alot.

Yea unbalanced tyres can cause undue wear on other components too.

Just get them balanced, it should be cheap as if the tyres are fitted, I learnt to fit and balance tyres in a few days, easy as. I'd offer but not in Aucks

yeh get them balanced because i garantee you will regret not doing it. some people complain about a 15 gram imbalance which is not much at all. with out a tyre machine tyres can be hard to fit, and semi's are even harder so beware that you might get some damage to the rims

These aren't semi's - they full proper slicks! And have pretty soft tyre walls - but I might just do it all at a tyre shop to save hassle....

Or the tires! slicks are a lot softer than road tires and its really easy to damage them if you don't know what you're doing/don't have the proper tools. If it were me, I would get them fitted by an experienced person at a tire shop with the correct equipment. It would really suck to spend good money on good tires and have them damaged because you're too cheap to fork out 10-20 per corner to have them fitted and balanced. Hell, most places will fit and balance tires for no extra cost if you've bought them off them.

I'm still unsure about getting them done at a shop.

At $25 a pop, for what would be about 30 minutes work, that's $200 an hour!!! I'm in the wrong business obviously!! lol

if you want a car that shakes and shuudders like a b'stard, be cheap.

have seen treaded tyres part down the pattern due to age and unbalance and its not a nice feeling when one does that as a steerer.

for motorsport use, the only tyres that one usually dosn't get too excited with accurate balance is rears on a RWD rally or drift car for obvious reasons 8)

Maybe they have done full slick race tyres before.

We used to do quite a few when we ran slicks and they are no where near as easy to do as a road tyre.
could do a whole road car in the time it took to get 1 slick to mount and sit on the bead correctly.

What do people pay to get tyres fitted and balanced?

I have been to Tonys Tyres and Beaurepaires and they are wanting $22-26 per tyre. I know what Tonys pay their employees and it can't take any longer than 15mins to fit 2 new tyres and balance them. Paying ~$50 to get 2 tyres done is really expensive.
