4agte blowing smoke at idle

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Mon Nov 10, 2008 8:16 am

my 4agte (t25 turbo) goes all good, except once its warmed up and been taken for a thrash, when its left to idle it starts blowing a lot of white smoke.

doesn't blow smoke on boost that I can tell, doesn't smoke when cold, only when idling once warm.

what's the likely cause? and is there an easy fix?

cheers

What colour's the smoke? Smoke at idle could be valve stem seals, getting sucked in while in pretty high vacuum.

Go down a hill, engine braking the whole way, then accelerate a bit at the bottom, does it pump out smoke then?

Does the smoke at idle go away if you rev it? i.e. once warm, let it idle for 30 seconds, then give it a rev to about 4,000rpm - does it pump out heaps of smoke, or just a little, or none while revving?

Get someone to follow you for a bit - getting them to take note when it DOES smoke - call them on handsfree (of course) and say "ok I'm going to gas it now, let me know if it smokes" etc

smoke is fairly white. i'll check next time I drive it whether it goes away while revving and report back  but when I'm driving it I don't notice any smoke out the back.

the engine was sitting in my shed for a couple of years before being installed, nothing to suspect the engine is dodgy (but i haven't stripped it down to confirm myself). the oil hasn't been changed since I got the engine going. in that time its done a couple of hours on the dyno and maybe 100km max on the road.

Turbo seals?
The Z does this every now and again and I suspect the PCV's (but iirc you have an oil catch can) a good thrashing seems to sort it for a while. For example it hasn't done it since track day :)

the turbo was in good condition before I got it, but it has had a few warm shutdowns since I've had it
mostly stuff like vacuum lines popping off on boost, then it won't idle and stalls. but if it was the seals, wouldn't it blow smoke all the time?

yep have a catch can. i should probably pull that off and check how much oil is it in too, should give me an idea of the engine.
and the car never gets driven without being thrashed...unless its getting pushed

Not always e.g. Boosted_162's RC
However I would think it would smoke consistently on idle.

Hehe go my turbo

Mine smoked real bad if left idling, but when on boost barely smoked at all. Still boosted perfect as well.

right finally got to drive it again. highlight of my week

i let it warm right up, no smoke, revved it, no smoke, took it for a good thrash on 5psi and then left it idling and still no smoke.

will take it for a drive on 12psi later on and see what happens...

MAybe check the dumppipe and see if there is any oil in there that could indicate whether the turbo seals are shot.
