SW20 3S-GE exhaust

Postby GDII » Mon Nov 10, 2008 6:03 pm

My MR2 has a standard exhaust but makes that nasty tinny noise that 3S-GEs make. I really don't like it.

How can I go about fixing this?

Two ways I have in mind.

1: Replace the old muffler with a new one of the same size as the old one is probably rotted out.

2: Get a new exhaust built from the 2-1 section and remove the cat and replace with a resonator. Or can't you remove cats now?

I don't want to increase the noise of the car. Just get rid of that sound.

Also it loses power at around 6k, would increasing the pipe size and having decent mufflers/resonators help give it more power up to 7k redline?
Or would that just increase the loudness of the exhaust and defeat the purpose of what I'm trying to achieve in the first place?
I still want to retain the twin tail pipes out the back which are aftermarket 48mm ID.

No rules on cats yet. Easiest way would be to put a turbo in there ;)

I think N/A is where I'll stay.

Saving up to get a project car. So don't want to spend heaps on this car.

Your car won't have always sounded like that so I'm guessing you're either missing your cat (gutted housing) ? or your mufflers rooted as you guessed. I'd be trying to find a factory SW20 muffler in good nick and while your're replacing it see if in fact the cats gutted and if so replace it with a resonator.
