So... do you want to hear from the other side?

I've owned a 93 GT Legacy Wagon (TT) Auto since 97. 1st NZ owner after 1 Japanese owner had it for 88ks. Had a service at 1500ks and again at 40ks in Japan. So... I took this car to autocrosses, motorkhanas, 4 years of mainly intermarque sprints at Manfield. Done a ClubSport National Champ in it on borrowed tyres. :) Got 7th in the autocross. Regularly serviced.

The auto gearbox broke at 170ks, which is a known weak point. And I'd thrashed it seriously on the track. You don't want to know what things happened to it there. (But if you ask, I will tell you.) Got it rebuilt, and the car is retired from track work, and has now done 310ks. Standard. Engine not touched. Family car - the wife loves it - and I still love it. Great Grand Tourer of the best kind. Loves the Rimutakas. Handles very well.

The slushbox broke again at 290ks, and I got it rebuilt again. It goes like a dream, still. Touch wood. External bits have been replaced, like boots, cvs, wheel bearings (from Manfield LF), temp sensor, both factory blow-off valves, exhaust. Many many tyres, disc pads, and rotors had been replaced due to my activities.

It's had an exemplary service record since I got it. Proper factory service each 10ks. For the last 100ks, I've done it myself since I've learnt a bit. And saved a bit.

So... on to the STI. It's standard - ish. Done 5 years of sprints including Pukekohe, Taupo (all tracks), Manfield intermarques and club days, Port Road, Admiral Road, 2 x ClubSport Champs, countless motorkhanas and autocrosses - grass, sealed and gravel.

Lunched the motor on the first outing with semi-slicks on the track in 2004. Oil sloshed away from the pickup, and failed to keep #3 bearing lubricated - known fault, apparently. Rebuilt back to standard motor. Larger oilpan with baffled sump. No engine trouble after that. Have bent gear selectors, and lost detents in gearbox through unsympathetic moments at Donelly Park.

Years of enjoyment so far, and heaps of fun. Have worn out countless brake pads, rotors, and tyres. And used a lot of petrol.

Economy: Legacy - 8km/l, Impreza - 7km/l. On the track the Legacy and Impreza is about 1.5km/l. They have 250hp and 300hp+ respectively so to get the power out, you will use petrol. :(

To summarise then. The Subaru has faults, but is sooooo much fun, and is a reliable brand - provided you service and care for it.

pointing to those cars as examples of why subarus are good is retarded (as much as they are sweet cars) because the OP is asking about standard, daily driver type vehicles. i would be surprised if either of those cars has many original components left.

of course servicing is key, the point i have been trying to make is subarus in my experience cost more in this respect, and for no obvious benefit in terms of more power / better handling / whatever than other manufacturers.

ultimately most people buy cars with their heart / cock and not their heads, so do what floats yer boat imo.

What a lot of bollocks. These are original engines, original running gear. That was part of the point of my post.

Original untouched cars, well serviced, can do stirling service, even with high duty events.

toy baru your car is not all origional, you have had to replace quite a lot in your car, and rebuild your gearbox. TWICE. albeit with factory parts, it still isnt "as factory". try a 462,000km(and counting) toyota corolla, origional motor and gearbox, only things changed are brakes, clutch and cvs. or our 300,000 2e carby rolla, same again. nothing has had to have been rebuilt. and both these cars get thrashed to shit.

have you owned said car from new? How do you know the engine didn't lunch itself before your ownership?

As above, His car is 205kw from the factory, Your corolla is how many kw? and only drives 2 wheels.

For comparison, I do some of the events Toybaru does in my AE92 and I've destroyed more gearboxes than his impreza, And he does drive it hard and has the results to prove it!
I have probably entered my corolla in a third of the events he has used the impreza in 8O

Toy-baru certainly drives it fast , you can see his pic in the front of the motorsport NZ manual under " NZ autocross champion " , he's been champ 2 times ,both in the STI he talks about 8)

On a different point , now Toy-baru owns Leons old charade (De tomaso) shouldn't his user name be "Toy-mato" :?:  8O

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

i have owned many cars, dont treat them very nicely, but i do maintain them.

Out of all the cars i have owned, my first legacy (93 TT manual 210k), and my current legacy (94 TT manual 193k) are the most reliable.

My current legacy has only needed the usual consumable items... cambelt, brakes, clutch, coils etc. Hasnt eaten a motor (touch wood), and the gearbox is still nice (although the syncros are getting a little tired on 2nd).

As a standard, well maintained car... i would definitely recommend a subaru. Just dont start raping it, or itll break, just like any car.

I dont get half of this shit, about how they always break, and they asplode as soon as you look at them. Suppose, this is a toyota forum... fanboi's ahoy!

they are work loan cars, had them for ages, i think the 2e from like near new, the 4afe from i thinkkkkkk 70,000. but yes, fair enough, with turbos you do have a lot more maintanence to do, especially if you drive them hard. subarus are still shit though. ask anyone in the trade. although it hasnt stopped me looking at buying one, sooo tempted on a new ish legacy. but then i come back to reality and buy another toyota haha

I owned one, it was the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned, endured it for a year, two motors, three auto boxes, faulty cooling system, and no, it wasnt thrashed.

I'm picking up a bias here... I wonder if some of the above are annoyed that the Subarus are quite fast, and justifying why they haven't got one?
