Postby tim_blair » Sun Nov 16, 2008 12:19 pm

hi i have just installed an mr2 power steering pump on my levin to replace my belt driven one

when i tryed to run it a found it was pulling 40-50 amps

im aware that there is a whole computer system to control these
how ever im am after sum advice on how to run them
if someone has done it befor or knows how they are operated that would be great

idealy i would like it to run at low range (low steering assist) full time

thanks

barry (bazda) has one in his levin, im sure he will see this sooner or later and chuck a reply up. he's using a better alternator and some sort of controller that you can get through jaycar i believe.
When in doubt, down and out.

yes Im using one and its great!.

You need a DC motor controller.

You can buy ones from jaycar, they rated to 40A so will only deliver 40A max to the pump. Only thing it doesnt come with some sort of manual control.

So I then looked on ebay and they have various dc motor controllers.
This is the one I got, works mint, only thing is, it gets quite hot after about 30mins and then shuts it self off.

I'm now looking at a more sophisticated circuit board which can control 80A continuous. As these motors can draw up to 80A.
The 60A controller I have isnt enough when parallel parking or doing lots of turns very quickly. But its more than plenty for the track. I run it around half power so 30A for track racing.

hey thanks alot for your advice ill have a look into that dc controler

another thort i had was that aparently the pump itself has a pressure adjustment screw
so possibly if i wound the pressure right down it would give me a small amount of assist while only drawing a low current from the battery

have you heard of this "adjustment screw" and if so do you think this would work and do you know where the screw is

http://www.darksidecrew.com/forum/viewt ... 2103a228c3

this is where i found the info on the "adjustment screw" it says "pic 5" for a referance but the one i thort it would be is more accuratly shown in "pic 3"

check it out and tell me what you think
