Subarus - are they any better these days??

Ive owned a 1998 STI WRX Type R coupe and was the most fun i have had with the adjustable centre diff ect never had any problems with it and i gave it sh#t, only thing i had to do was cambelt and new tyres as it liked to go sideways alot
would have one again any day, and it was very good on gas i thought for a turbo 4wd, i dont see what every one complains about

i drive around a 96 legacy Gt when not punting the Group A 205 ..
It was a wreck hen we bought it ( previous driver went thru a fence - DUI) we put new panels on it - repaced a few bent bits from the spares my housemate had - and got it running again ..
everything on it rattles , its kinda " character building " to drive - but yet it refuses to die .. It hauls crap around , gets the groceries , takes the dogs out , you nake it - just a hack ..
It was used as the support vehicle for our targa camapgn this year hauling spares and tools and passengers - Didnt die ..
It in theory shouldnt be driving still - its like that cat with 9 lives ..
Its off to palmy north this weekend for a weekend roadtrip - i expect it to get there and backl without fuss ..
Some seem good - some seem bad - though id still prefer a caldina

i dont doubt the performance of them, i just think there is a lot of better cars out there. and theres the fact my turbo starlet seemed to be able to drag off quite a few f them on the street...
they were boy racer ones though, so io doubt they were in very good cond

I done a 14.6 in my Forester, mate done a 14.2 in his STOCK standard and another done 13.8 with only exhaust and ecu chip...

Your mate with the big turbo Starlet must be the one who can't drive then.. I ran a 14.6 on 5psi of boost while running mine in. Johndoe ran a 15 flat in his standard GT with standard boost/open diff etc. Would think a GT28 is capable of significantly more poke than ours were
(not my intent to make light of foresters, I actually quite like them)
Work colleague has an 02 STI, taken me for a blat a few times.. very impressive car in virtually all respects, has cut some pretty damn good laps around puke/taupo and other than destroying brake pads hasn't had any issues at all. I don't doubt the performance or reliability of the high spec turbo models.
At the other end of the spectrum my grandmother and her partner have owned Legacy's virtually my entire life, the last one was passed onto my cousin at 260k and is still going strong to this day. 2 litre non turbo, no serious mechanical problems other than general maintenance items (brakes/cv's/clutch)
Flatmate has a non turbo Impreza and has had no mechanical issues over the last four years. Nice car to cruise around in.
I think everybody can agree that the key to a reliable subaru is to keep it well serviced. Unfortunately the service history from japan is often a complete unknown.

As long as you look after the fueling and maintance side of your subaru you will be sweet.
I'm at 173k in my type r and its still running brilliantly, daily driver at this stage as well.

Actually, there are replies ranging all the way from "great" to "crap" from owners and non owners. I'd actually say that it is a pretty good cross section of replies and experiences shown here, considering it's a forum mostly for Toyota owners. That said, pretty much everyone here owns or has owned a variety of cars.

Yes you are right, i was more aiming at the people from the first 2 pages, with the subaru = shite etc comments.
Sure some idiots manage to blow theres up through stupid boost etc, an NA car is more forgiving for these types of morons as you can't increase the power quite as easily ie running a legacy at twice standard boost etc.
But subaru's tend to attract a lot of munters, and hence why there is so many stories of peoples mates mates with blown engines gearboxes etc.

i think alot of the unreliable rep comes from earlier legacys etc which were very accessible to your average moron 3 or 4 years ago, which combined with 10 or 12 years of wear and tear resulted in alot of them being destroyed.
you hardly see them anymore, particularly the RS sedans.
i think alot of their affordability comes from not being over-engineered, so even mild mods can be dangerous to longevity. there are always exceptions, but i still maintain on average that a subaru (turbo or non) costs more to maintain than most other jappas.
