Supercharging 3sge

Postby dunkindoza » Sat Nov 22, 2008 2:33 am

Hi everyone
i own a 1990 toyota celica gt-r, and in next few weeks am getting new engine put into it,
was wondering if it is at all possible to supercharge the 3sge engine, if i get the engine forged beforehand?

if it is possible what model supercharger would i be after? and is it possible to supercharge and turbo the engine?

sorry for seeming so unknowledgeable, but am young and have very little knowledge of engines and things about them lol

thankyou in advance

You don't NEED to forge the engine.
Stock motors can handle forced induction, provided it's tuned well and you are realistic with the expected results. It also depends onthe condition of the motor to begin with.

Slap a SC14 from a 1GGZE on it and it'll go well. The pulley ratio will determine the boost level it'll run. As for tuning, go for a Link or similar and get it tuned by a reputable tuner.

Also, I always wondered if you could just bolt on all the turbo gear from a 3SGTE into a 3SGE and use the ECU and everything to make it work. Obviously the compression ratio would be different so you might need to do something about the timing and tuning. You could look into whether that'll work or not.
I know guys have done that with bolting 4EFTE turbo stuff onto 5EFHE motors.

I'm actually wondering about that seriously. If I could find all the standard turbo stuff you reckon the 3sge ECU would be able to run it? How many psi could you expect to run reliably on a high comp engine?

The exhaust manifold probably wouldn't bolt up as the heads are different but if someone wanted to turbo their ST18x then an ST185 3sgte and loom bolts/plugs straight in and all you need is an st185 bonnet for the top mount ic. A former toyspeed member jools did this with his celica and it was quite a weapon iirc.

well i can say first gen 3sge with first gen 3sgte turbo, exhaust maifold etc lasted all of about 5 minutes before it shat itself on a standard computer with retarted timing

Sucks :(

Oh well, I may be getting a Link when I wire the 3SGE up in the corolla with this option in mind. But I would probably be looking at either a engine build with a 3sgte head and 3sge pistons (+ other mixes and matches i guess) to get a high comp engine that the factory manifold would bolt up to?

That car was bloody insane! Made just over 200kw at the wheels. I got to drive it one night in the rain, wheelspin central!!
