smallport ae82 problem

Postby boostr991 » Sat Nov 22, 2008 12:22 pm

Hey I recently completed a smallport engine conversion on ae82 fxgt corolla. Everything went well apart from the cambelt timing marks. I marked the old belt and changed those marks onto the new belt. But when I rotated it the marks were 2 teeth out on the crank but the notch in the crank gear still lined up as did the cam gears. So I thought it would be okay and have now put everything back together and went to start it and doesnt want to. When I take the oil filler cap off air is released also. Any help from where to go from here would be much appreciated.

forget about marks on belt, the ones to worry about are on the pulleys. if those are lining up then timing is sweet.

check basics fuel / spark / compression

As said, marking the belt is a waste of time... and pretty much guaranteed to fail.
Use the markings that Mr Toyota put on the crank pulley, timing cover, cam wheel backing plate, cam wheels, the notch on the input cam shaft, and the notch on the dizzy cog.

Marking the belt is fine for the initial fitting but won't be of any use once you rotate it to check alignment, then you need to confirm via the factory markings.

Did you have the new engine running in the car before cambelt was changed?

No I bought the engine from a wrecker so have no idea on the history of the engine. Anyone have any idea on why there would be air releasing from the filler cap and dipstick?

I have the car starting now 8) But the ecu is limiting the engine at 2500rpm. Is there any way of checking to see if its throwing any codes?
