2e oil consumtion.

Postby CaM » Mon Dec 01, 2008 9:15 am

got a 2e powered starlet that's only done 150k, and is burnign oil hardout.
it doesn't smoke profuesly on the over-run, which would suggest valve guides/stem seals, but to me it doesn't seem like a ring problem. it doesn't smoke proportionate to engine load, and doesn't smoke at idle. engine isn't idled around and gets a good workout so I shant imagine that the bores would be glazed. It also pulls really, really well. Which would not be the case with a worn engine
the crankcase ventilation system seems to be working correctly. it's not throwing oil out there, and it doesn't breathe any more than I would expect a reasonbly healthy engine would.
am I right in suspecting exhaust valve stem seals? given that on the over-run, it doesn't do the normal valve guide puff of smoke then the inlet side must be of reasonable condition. the exhaust side isn't subject to the same vacuum......
I haven't pulled the plugs and run a compression test or had a look at the deposits on them either but I reckon they'll all be spot on.
Any ideas/confirmations?

should have said, it does smoke a bit though, just seems to be a constant stream unless it's at idle or 'taps shut'
the engine is absoltely oil tight.

yuh is like, commented on the wof so next time it'll probably be thrown out.
probably worth throwing a couplefo hundy at it for a top set and a days work if stem seals are a weak point on them if that were to stop it instead of killing a litre of oil or more a week.

I'm surprised its burning that much, my 2e in the corolla has done 145km, and didnt use a drop of oil before I started work on it.

same. everything about the car is mint, always serviced and lokoed after. thinking something's gone amiss witht he top end given that the smoke doesn't seem to be dependent on engine load or revs. hmm.

a litre a week is pretty serious stuff! might be cheaper to fix it after all :P

from what you have said regarding the times that it smokes im leaning towards crank ventilation but that would point to blowby which sounds unlikely.

leakdown test ftw

Out of interest have you got a link to step by step for a leakdown test? and whats the other one? tk test?

Would like to know some info on these?

Is it something thats covered on here? Will have a search and see what comes up.

it doesn't breathe heavily and pcv valves are all working as they should. it's not blowing it all out the breather, and therefore rings are fine. compresion ones anyway hah.

ugh
leakdown will tell me little if it's not breathing out the engine breathers.
