TGP parts warrantee?

Postby kim0663 » Tue Dec 02, 2008 4:45 am

Im not sure where to post this but here it goes.. Mods, move to appropriate forum if need be please :D

I purchased a cambelt kit etc etc from Toyota North western last year, january. Installed it all, on my engine and put the engine in the car.

Didn't even get to drive the car 100kms in total before i had to part the vehicle out.

Now, i had another vehicle, same car (my current mr2, 3sgte). And this car was due for a coolant flush and my thermostat seemed to have siezed open. So i thought hey, it'd be cool if i rip off the new thermostat off the engine i took off the parted out car.

So last week, i took it off, but found that my current one in my mr2 was a 82 C thermostat and the one off my old 3sgte is a 72 C one. I thought this was a bit funny as I don't think toyota would have given me a wrong part.

I flushed it for around 30 mins (didn't flush the heater lines or cores tho), got red "Nulon" coolant and poured it in, and assembled with the 72 C one which has less than 100kms on it as mentioned above.

Bleed the cooling system, and car heated up to temp pretty fast so was happy.

Went for a drive, then noticed the temp just went down again as if it had no thermostat.

My questions, -

1. Red coolant, and Green Coolant, i heard you shouldn't mix the two? My new one is red and old one was green
2. which one would be the correct temperature? 82C or the 72C
3. would a thermostat become buggered if it's been not used for nearly two years after being first used?
4. How long does toyota provide warrantees for on parts the sell?

1. no you must not mix the two, because they dont mix they just sit on top of each other and possibly turn to sludge.

2. 70 degrees is fine

3. sitting around unused shouldnt cause the thermostat to wear.

then what would be a good theory to explain this funny situation mate? 8)

Looking down the radiator cap, the coolant doesn't seem to have thickened or sludged or anything, seems fine.

Havn't opened the pipes up tho...

You didn't flush the heater, therefore didn't do the job properly. Can't expect a warranty on parts.

Very easy to check for correct thermostat operation per the manual in any case.

So it worked fine in the other car, but not in this one? Pretty obvious where the fault is....
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!
