firewall too hot

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Thu Dec 04, 2008 8:03 pm

I took the ke25 for a cane tonight, only for about 10 mins.
by the time I got back the firewall beside the dump pipe was too hot to touch, as in I now have a blistered finger

obviously this is a bit of a fire hazard with the carpet etc.
whats the best way I can reduce the heat? there isn't much room to re-route the dump pump, maybe 1" extra clearance max.
is there any sort of covering I can put between the floor and carpet or anything??

The guys who do commercial refrigeration use some sort of heat shield blanket when they're brazing around fridge motors. See if you can track down some of that and attach it to the firewall. You can put a gastorch directly on to one side and not feel any heat on the other. Think it comes in 300mm squares and is silver both sides.
See ya

Yip, hit the nail on the head, provided there is a bit of air space between the firewall and the heat sheild it'll be mint.

heatwrapping the dumppipe is not too bad and shouldn't cause it to crack, i think this would be your best bet if there is not much space, which sounds like the case if the firewall is getting that hot.

heatwrap on a manifold however will cause it to crack, happened to me, haven't used it on manifold since and it's been fine.

Yeah I was assuming not much space between dump and firewall, if its getting hot and there is an air gap its cos of convection, so smaller gap = more heat transfer. If there is enough of an air gap go for the heat shield.

What is your dump pipe made from?

As for cracked manifold I was under the impression it depended what material it was made from as to whether you can get away with heat wrap? Can't specify more than that sorry, not sure which materials are affected but at a guess I would say you probably shouldn't be wrapping stainless steel, if thats what you have.

heat shielding

Postby ezy10s » Fri Dec 05, 2008 5:48 am

the heat shield used on crankins carina is available through repco- its awesome stuff- just cut it to the shape you want- drill a couple mounting holes and bolt it to whatever is available.

im not a fan of heat wrapping,
i like stainless heat shields if room permits.
and insulating affected areas with heat resistant matting.

hpc do a ceramic coating that keeps heat in but the downside is it sucks your wallet dry,

Yeah its an ACL product. The stuff i got was 700x290. Its pretty good. Easy to use/piece of cake to bend etc. If you have the latest NZPC mag its the same stuff nick teeboon used in his AE86 around the strut tower and firewall

HOW much space between the exhaust and the firewall? I think it'd be better to contain it at its source then insulate inside. Metal plates work very well so Temporarily use a heat-shield or two, made out of anything available like a license plate or sheets of layered up of aluminum foil between the exhaust & firewall, with an air space in between. A piece of coat hanger can hold hold a prototype in place for a few hours of testing.
