Rough Idling when cold - RB30DET

Postby samlloyd » Sun Dec 07, 2008 7:27 pm

Its been an intermitant problem for a while, it cleared it self for about a week where it ran perfect, but now its doing the same thing.
On first start up, when cold, it runs like a dog, it misses something chronic, and it seems to come right when its upto water temp and the oil starts thinning abit.

Im not sure of an easy way to test coil packs individually. Its got a G3 in it.

Would this sound like a problem to do with the 02 sensor? I took it out and went down to repco and they reckoned $330. Just said yiiiiiiip and walked out.

Where else would sell new sensors and what are they actually worth. This particular one is a 3 wire, red black white.

Any help appreciated

sounds like a typical link tune to me......

it shouldn't run closed loop idle until its at around 70degrees coolant temp so the oxygen sensor wouldn't do squat when its below normal operating temp.

my mate has just over come this problem on his rb30det.
his one was running mint just sitting there but when he tried to drive it, it was rich and missed so bad. but after 15min of worm up, beautiful..
that was tracked down to a failing coil, cant remember what computer he is running it on right now but he will switch to full after market after the run in. prob a link too.

Can anyone explain how the cold start thing works?

What are New Coils worth to buy. Or is the wasted spark thing the way to go

I'd probably go wasted spark, alot less hassle and cheaper in the long run.

cold start mapping gives 2 things, a bit more advance, which is slowly dropped back to 'normal' as it gets closer to normal operating temp. and Enrichment of the fuel map, which then gets leaned back to 'normal' as it gets closer to normal operating temp.

main problem... its an RB =P

if its got a g3 then id just shoot into your local 'performance tuner' and as them to have a quick gander, with link computers you can see exactly whats happening with your fuel/ignition. they should be able to iron the problem out pretty easily. like shelfie said, just sounds like a shitty/dodgy cold start tune which is easily tuned out.

personally id much rather spend $200 for a couple hours labour than guessing between coils, temp senders etc.

what ignition/coil setup does it have? sounds pretty rangi if its still using the factory RB coils. pretty basic to setup a waste spark, and if its a g3 link plus u can run independant ignition and the thing will run smooth as.
