Hrm, if you are hard on the loud pedal, and you want reasonable economy around town, I think none of the cars that you have listed are going to be what you're after.

A good on gas cruiser is really going to have to be a diesel!

You could always consider something four or five door in the Corolla range, eg Carib BZ Touring, or a newer shape Corolla like a Fielder or something along those lines (the ones with the 1800vvti engine) or Corolla GT Sedan (111 shape)?

What about a Prius?

With the RUC's where they are after the increase and diesel not dropping as much as petrol at the pumps, i disagree here. Its costing my bud the same as me to run his jeep at the moment. Me having a 328i, and him with the MU. Dad even prefers his 1L runabout to the hiace when he wants to save gas.

The end of the diesel is nigh :(

Speedo disconnected?

Pffft, my 5.7L Hemi with Fred Flintsone driving would get better mileage. Footpower pwns your disconnected speedo..

Of course 8)

I was going for the comedy answer, rather than an actual useful answer.

The cheapest thing for around town use, other than running shoes, would actually be a wee Honda four stroke 50cc moped :) Bit hard to carry much with you though.

What about a Mark II Tourer?
Much the same as a Chaser but half the price.
Or a TT Aristo

My folks were looking at a diesel Rav 4 a while back (new) its fuel economy was stupidly good. So the end of diesel is not nigh at all.

The end is nigh for uneconomical diesels and petrol cars though
