over torqueing

OK so i made abit of a blunder how serious is it if i overtorque the head it was supposed to be 22ft-lbs when i made it 30. Should i just leave it? pull the headstuds out and redue it?( they might be abit stretched now though). Its a blacktop if it matters.

ok was it 30ftlb on its own or are they torque turn as well?

the torque spec of 22 should have a +/- figure or percentage, do you know what that was

22ft-lbs is just the first step
take them out and do it again
with the 20vs you torque them, then do another 90 then 90
so 30ft-lbs wont have over torqued it

are you using new bolts?

yes im using new bolts i torqued them to 30 ft-lbf then 90 then 90 again. So it will be ok to take them out and do it again, they wont be stretched? the book says 22 ft-lbf thats foot pounds right?

Not sure whether you will get away with leaving them in, but if you do take them out its bin time for those headbolts. Do not re-use torque to yeild bolts.

NO it doesnt have a +/- on it just straight up figures

There is a specific range regarding length that the bolts have to be within. As I understand it, if they are within the range they can be reused. Standard length is 114-115.00mm. Maximum length is 116.50mm.

ive asked around and im getting mixed responses, im getting a few people saying i should just leave them they will be fine. What could happen to them?

seriously due to the hassle of what could happen, i would just replace them, is it really worth risking it?

I went to an engine reconditioner today and asked them they said it should be fine and i should just leave them.

I reckon it'll be fine.

I over torque all my headbolts a little bit anyway, haven't had a failure yet.

a wee bit of extra squeeze won't hurt, no worse than going 95 then 95 degress on rotational torque.

on a good day, might even sqaush the gasket more and bump the compression slightly!!!!

It's only an intermediate step, doesn't matter. The purpose of the intermediate steps is to ensure the bolts are done up evenly.


As for the link.

I don't understand how putting a 10mm bolt into a 10 mm hole (in a block & head) is going to save any significant weight over a 12mm bolt in a 12mm hole.

Strange logic.... sure the bolts are lighter ...what about the holes?

Sure , steel bolts, aluminium head but?
