Why is this? Im genuinely interested to know. In fact, how come the 3S engines get the shunt in favour of the 4a's in like, every situation? Are they just not that great of an engine or something?

Well ive owned both and a rate the 4age above the 3sge. 4ages are just the better engine overall imo. Mainly because they're more reliable than the 3sge, and arguably more have support/parts available for the 4age - if you do manage to break one 8)

i think it comes down to ease and availability - a turbo 4age can be built to crank out good power in light cars for minimal cost, whereas the 3S seems to be more expensive in pretty much every respect.

Ah yup, makes sense. I've only dealt with 20v's so never paid any attention to the 3s family and what people do with them.

Plus the fact 3S's slant, and were never available in a north south configuration, makes them that much trickier to get right. The extra weight is probably another downer.

3sgte + SR. it can be done easy if you know what parts to use,
ive done 20v blacktop into ae86 and now doing 3sgte into ae86 and to be honest its been way easier with the 3sgte,

20v went like this,
motor, ecu loom, $1200(at the time)
w55, nite parts bellhousing, 4agze clutch combo. $1400
mounts and such, free from ae86.
DLI ignition + coils $400
drive shaft, water lines, $130

3sgte....
gen2 motor, ecu, loom $500
w55 + Y series bellhousing $400
evo 3 intercooler evo6 turbo $400
manifolds yet to be made. prob $400
1S engine mounts, 2t cross member and secret d-shaft. $80
DLI ignition + coils $400
water lines bla bla bla easy

half the price, double the power and 10x the toque
but a smallport 4age + t50 can be done in a weekend,

3s rwd is great! truenotch runs one in his ae86 race car its a gen3 slant 3sge setup.

Was meaning 3SGTE, but yeah, possibly could pilfer some bits from a BEAMS 3S to make it easier.
