gearbox temperatures?

Postby Akane » Wed Dec 10, 2008 7:05 pm

How hot should be the casing of a manual gearbox after a normal drive? just a ballpark figure would be OK, like warm? hot to touch? hot? etc? Or am I going in the wrong direction as there's no general set temp? Thanks.

its bolted onto the motor, so id say itd get pretty hot, they need heat to make them work nicer anyway. probably hot, almost too hot to touch? i think.

BTW-wrong place to have this question, shouldnt it be in tech?

Plus horses that dont make it from the crank to the wheels leave some heat in the box, so its normal to be pretty hot. If its glowing there are issues though 8O

normal drive I'd guess that it would be about as hot as the block as the heat will transfer to it, but will depend on how long you drive, as it wont transfer instant,

but under load and power is a different story,
with no cooler a manual trans may se 140 deg c at times,
and i know from changing my box in the weekend, that is is hot enough to burn you.
