Postby kramer2202 » Thu Dec 11, 2008 4:01 pm

Hey was wandering if any one knows how to tell a silver top gear box from a black top gear box?

you cant name them like the engines as some ae101's (facelift only) got the c56 just like the ae111 bzg/bzv.

so some boxes are the same across the two. i havent found a decent reliable way to tell between a c52 and a c56 that was fitted to an ae1x1

Best bet is if you have the car check the trans code on the build plate, but I am guessing you don't have it?

Otherwise you could count the ratio's = time consuming.

Besides that I don't know

Some blacktops run 5speed,

I imagine the difficulty is between c52 and c56

c52 vs c56...
nightmare!
ratios different depending on year, engine (4age or 4afe) etc
compare 1st 3rd and 4th gears
4age cars had 3.166 first
c52 4age had 1.333 3rd gear
c56 4age had 1.392 3rd gear
info i have says 101 fxgt had 1.31 3rd....

and the 4afe cars had different ratios again

if you want to know if you have a c56, look for 1.392 3rd and 1.031 4th

If thats correct, then what does the 52 or 56 part of the code signitfy? and if C series and S series have the same sized diff, then whats the difference which dictates weather the box gets a C, S or E designation? Input spline count????

Interesting,,

I thought the 4afe powered cars only came with c50s,and the c52s and c56s were only available on the sports type models. aw11s, ae92, ae101 etc.

But since the topic is up and I have what I believe is a c56 sitting on the floor in the garage, what would be the ratio of turns of input shaft to output shaft for a c56? (its for sale if anybody wants one)

I assume I will need to stop one output shaft turning, and turn the input shaft shaft say 10 full revolutions and see how far the other output shaft has turned?

Nup, was looking at an NZ new AE101/4AFE that had a C52. Well so said the build plate anyway.

Interesting, you didn't happen to take note of the bit after the c52 designation.. was it 15A or something else?

Maybe c52 is the gear ratios, and the 15A or whatever is the diff ratio.
I cant see a 4afe running the same overall ratio as a 4age comfortably.

the title has nothing to do with the ratios. struggling to recall what has an S box....
well, C box is very very different from an E box....

the info i have states for example in the ae111 different ratios depending on if is a xz or fz

NA SW20's have S52 (?). Was gonna say, I'm sure there are different ratio T50's out there as well, depending on the vehicle they came from.
