Breaking bolts

Ok so i started torquing up the botls on the oil retainer and it just seems like they wanted to turn forever. The torque bar never clicked, eventually one of the bolts just snapped. Now do i replace just the one bolt or all of them to the same grade? And why does it just keep turning?

check your reading and setting the torque correctly.

the very first clutch i did i got a mate to read the specs out of the manual
i was torquing up the bolts for the clutch cover, and he read out the flywheel bolt spces! being a n00b i didnt click that they were waaay too high until i did what you just did.

how bigs your torque wrench? most are quite long and if your doing up a small bolt, you wont feel it get tight

What was the torque you were trying to do them up too?

I was doing it up to 8 ft-lbf and the torque wrench is really long but i tested the setting on a already torqued bolt and it clicks. The manual i have doesnt have the section to show the torque settings for the oil retainer.

bolt was probley $&#$%. i broke one holding the oil collector pipe too.

what i dont understand is why the bolts just keep turning and turning. They are pretty tight im just scared to try and do it with the other bolts and they snap inside of the block.

Just like headbolts..... you've torqued it past it's yeild point so it stretches until it snaps.

does the torque wrench actually work that low?

most of the big ones i have seen have much higher minimum settings

what size torque wrench are you using? whats its max torque,
general rule of thumb a torque wrench is no good at the lower 30% of the scale

on a torque / bolt that small you need a small 3/8 or even a 1/4 drive torque wrench

personally i do small stuff upto 20ftlb by hand with out a torque wrench,

you will probably find it feeled like it nipped then felt a little give as it started stretching the bolt before it snapped

Im using a rather large torque wrench minimum setting is 20 ftlbf but im still able to wind it backwards. So whats the suggestions then smaller torque wrench and new bolts? Just replace one bolt? Ideas?

if you have overtightened them replace them all,

definatly get a smaller torque wrench,

just because you can wind it backwards doesnt mean it will work,
they start higher because the lower end of the scale isnt accurate
