AE86 axles and rotors - no fit ?

Postby beeker » Sun Dec 21, 2008 8:04 pm

About 12 months ago i purchased 2x spare prefacelift axles for my AE86. Due to an accident (Bent the left axle and rotor), I ended up having to use one, and a 3rd party installed it along with my spare rear rotor (this rotor was previouly on my car).

All seemed to go well until i purchased 2x new rear rotors and attempted to install them over the recently installed left axle. Unfortunely, it doesnt fit (easily or at all), and the reality you would have to bash it with a hammer to have any chance of getting it on (something i'm unwilling to do!). I made the assumption it was a poor product, and purchased a new set from a different manufacturer (QH). Same problem, they wont fit over the outter edge of the axle. See the red bit below where the rotor jams on.

I'm come to the conclusion that this axle set may somehow not be an AE86 axle set ? and be slightly larger on the ~stud plate (marked in red above).

Can anyone shed any light on this ?

PS. What i cant explain is why my old spare rear rotors fit over both my old and new axles. They obviosly have more clearence.

Whats the diameter red part? The axles maybe off a Corona or similar which have larger rear brakes from memory?

For these new rotors, have tried 2x different suppliers and 2x different manufacturers. Same issue.

They have to be the correct axles due to the bearing size. I have had this problem before, I found that there were 2 different sizes. What is the outside dia. of the axle flange?

New Axle measurements:
Outter: approx 139.1mm
Inner ~hub centric ring: approx 60.0mm

The old axles are oh so close, and perhaps .1mm smaller on average for both the inner and outter. I get a slight different every time.

The more i play with the spare, it looks like the inner hub centric ring is just to tight.

Ideas ?

Should i just be filing the rotor and axle down ?

It fits in the 86 housing but the TA22 housing/axles are the shortest of all housings and the axle only just engages the spline on the diff head

Different bearings, only AE86/TE71 axles have 'silly big' bearings!

I will measure a few flanges when I get home and post up what I find.

Well after a measure up of 12 discs and 11 axles I don't really have an answer!

All the discs I could find had a 60mm centre (locating hole) and 140ish outside.
9 Axles had a 60mm centre (locating boss) and 139is outside.
So the disc should make a snug fit but not be interference fit.
2 axles had a 59mm centre which were custom made and must have been $&#$% up!

Can you post a pic of the disc?

Its beginning to sound like axle wear (lips caused by the odd bang etc) and tear and rust, plus very fine tolerance on the new rotors is simply too tight a fit. I might try filing down the edges on the axles and also new rotors, and see if it will squeek on.

Resolved with 5 minutes of filing down the edges of the axles stud plate outter edge. Just enough i guess to take the burrs and knocks off it.

Very fine tolerences.
