what to do - engine install

Postby deaf_rattle » Sat Dec 27, 2008 9:59 am

OK guys, the heap that is my 7m is just about ready and i need to work out the best plan of attack for the install.

The engine bay currently needs painting and the front radiator support needs repairs (have new part to get welded in)

Should i make the repairs and get the engine bay painted before installing the engine and then get the custom pipe work done and then its all finished.

Or install the engine, get the custom pipe work made up and then pull everything out and paint engine bay that way everything should be mint for final install.

Cheers

I'd get the bay all painted and put the engine in, then do the pipework.

Only because its probably less work to be careful of the paint when doing the work on it rather than removing and installing the engine a second time.

option two, cuz everything will be cut/weldeed and ready to go so you wont have the opportunity to slip with your drill/grinder etc and ruin your shiy new paint. its all just bolts :D

Either way you have to put the engine in after the paint job, it's just a matter of fabricating the pipes before it's painted or after.

Painting first means you could scratch/mark the paint while making up the pipes, painting after fab. means it's all ready to go and you've only got the one chance of ruining the paint (putting the engine in) rather than two chances (putting the engine in and fabricating the pipes)

I say go with mocking them up first, then painting. Sure it'll take a little bit longer, but you're less likely to damage the paint.

do paint and repairs first.
cover engine bay in sheets or blankets or cardboard or even carpet (carpet side to the paint).
when engine goes in, potentual scratches are reduced.
also being careful helps too

Tip, an engine is much easyer to put in with the gearbox attached.

yeah, gearbox will be attached
i think ill build a dummy motor as has been advised before.

dummy motor in for pipe work. pull out, paint engine bay and then put bling motor in.
