easiest ( and only way ) I,ve found is to remove the cams/crank from the block.

Pull the cams out and slide the seals off, etc etc,

but if your replacing them cause your doing a cambelt,
i usually just put them on the shelf in the pile of
'stuff to fit oneday'.

I tried this the other day, and when I loosened off the bolts holding the
crank, it dropped down and crushed two of my fingers against the cross
member. After I got back from A&E I discovered that the new seal
wouldn't stretch over the crank pulley. I had to try and hold the crank
up with one hand and undo the pulley bolt with the other. I jammed a
piece of wood against the ring gear to stop the crank turning.

But when I yanked on the power bar, the starter fell off the manifold and
landed on my shin. I got such a shock, I sat up to grab my leg, and
smacked my head against the chassis rail. This caused me to lose my
grip on the crank, which dropped on my chest. The pistons came out of
the bores, and when I pushed them back in, I broke a couple of those big
circlips. Didn't worry too much, as there seemed to be a couple of spare
ones on each piston.

At this stage I was starting to get a bit pissed with the whole DIY thing,
so in the end I just cut the seal with a stanley knife, and fitted it with a
dab of silicone sealer on the join. Put everything back together and took
the car for a test run. Its down on power, and I notice that it is blowing
a bit of blue/grey smoke. Do you think my TPS needs adjusting ??

Whatever you've done, it will get more expensive to fix cos' we all know that once you let the smoke out, whatever it is you've tried to fix, will stop working soon.

TPS??? What would that have to do with it.... its clearly going to be down on compression so i'd be heading down to supercheap to grab myself a decent sized can of compression to run through the bores. 8)

That's about what I was thinking.

And I was more thinking of pulling the crank from the block NOT while it is still in the car.

Basically to do a crank seal you'd just about have to remove the oil pump from the engine.

So... do ya reckon adjusting the TPS will fix it ??

Nah, i think Lukes on the money. A can of compression will do you right, maybe 2 if its really low

Oh and check your blinker fluid at the same time, so much easier to replace when your topping up the compression!

Lol

seriously though, I usually hammer a small flat head screwdriver through the middle of the seal and then lever it out. This removes the seal without any damage to the metal sealing surfaces.
Then push in the new seal carefully with a big socket, or a block of wood and a hammer.

Screw a couple of self tappers into the seal and pull it out with some pliers/vice grips.
Failing that take the screws out, blunt the ends off and put em back in, wind them up till they start driving the seal out (this method will only work if theres something behind the seal)
