Corona st170 3SGTE wagon - Misfire!

Postby CelicaGT8 » Sat Jan 03, 2009 12:41 am

I have built a hybrid 3sgte - 165 block with 185 head - forged pistons, external and all the usual bs... and put it into a 170 corona wagon.

It runs great untill it gets to about 0psi on the boost gauge, then it sort of holds back, then sends the car flying forwards untill it reaches around 10 - 14psi, then it just back fires and farts around.

Iv had a simular problem with a 3s engine before, but cant rember what i did to solve it...

Any help would be AUSM!

its really dependant on what ECU you are running

st165? aftermarket? st185? sounds like my st165 but 10X worse. (the afm was bouncing so bad it cuts the fuel pump)

upload the pic to someone like

It happened to me once that I'd full throttle and the car will go nowhere, nowhere as in 1300rpm and struggle to take off and will just sit there all day. Turns out my cam timing was way off, making the dizzy's firing way off. I rangi fixed it by full advance on the dizzy, then later proper fixed it with putting the cam forward 1 tooth on the cambelt (back to original position)

It came up with a knock sensor code - u think that could be the prob?
Um - does anyone have one?? im using a levin one 20v

A knock sensor fault will cause it to run like shit but when you said it flies forward after hesitating do you mean accelerate quickly? Becuase that would be unlikely with a knock sensor fault.
Worn dissy cap, rotor & leads would cause major hesitation and misfiring.
Don't forget that pre & post facelift ST185/SW20's have a different plug on the knock sensor and did you run shielded cable to the knock sensor?

Sounds exactly like what happened to my 3sgte. My afm was shot so I got one off a 3ltr v6 windom and it fitted perfectly. The only thing was it was a lot larger than the original one. It made it run how you're describing, cough and splutter, then a big surge of boost. I know you havn't got a v6 windom afm , but maybe your afm is rooted. :P

The wire to the knock sensor has a earth shield around it.

The dissy cap is mint, and has new leads.

Yea once it hesitates around 0psi it accelerates like it should untill it gets higher boost. then it back fires and runs like total crapp!

Ill get that dam knock sensor fixed then get back to you all.
Thanks for your help so far.

But does anyone know where/ how i can flair my intercooler piping.
it popping off is sooo gay.

I thaught about tigging around it, but i didnt think that was going to look quite as good - not like anyone will see it tho.

But if it was easy to do then id like to have it done right.
although i still have to get some welding done to get rid of the joiners...

if the piping is aluminium then you can easily roll a bead on it with a swaging tool, Alert Engineering have one that'll do it easy

Does anyone know if a 4age 20v knock sensor will work on a 3sgte?

they're in the phone book. :P

but because I have a business card here, I'll tell you. Unit 5, 4 Clemow Drive, Mt Welly.

A 4agze sensor may share the plug & thread, but knock sensors are tuned to resonate at the frequency at which the engine knocks (which i believe has something to do with cylinder bore, but TBH I don't really know). You're much better off getting one from a 3s (I imagine that fe/ge/gte should all be the same, but i could be wrong)

for reference, st182 3sges have the same knock sensor, the 20 valve one bolts in, but has a different plug
