Underbody rust protection

Postby xsspeed » Tue Jan 06, 2009 10:02 am

Saw this on trademe, Shell Rustguard

$68 for 20L (iirc)

Datasheet: http://www.sealtec.co.nz/anytime/pdf_files/anytime461e7132a053fp314.pdf

Would this stuff be suitable for use on my landrover (full rebuild, galv'd chassis)

Or would por15 be better?

How much would I be looking at for por15 (20L)

Would it be worthwhile using this on othercars as well?

saw it on an oldschool thread, the guy has heaps of buckets of the stuff

I saw that and would get it aye, looks like it would certainly do the trick. 20L of POR15 would be about 1300 bucks haha.

POR15 gives awesome protection, but bang for buck that looks really good! I would have got some if they would ship but they don't :(

BTW, just realised it was me that posted that on oldschool haha.

I'm sure you are aware that that underseal and POR15 are very different products with different purposes? Only apply underseal over well prepared surfaces that are totally rust free. POR15 is for application direct to bare rusty metal.

Underseal won't help if not properly applied, I've peeled too much of it off where it had made rust worse than it should have been.

Can't complain about the price though!

I don't think you will need anywhere near 20Litres of POR15. It goes really far. You could paint a house with 20L, well.. maybe if wood wasnt so absorbent. I recon you could get a few coats of POR15 on your chassis with only 1 or 2Litres.

Is this a propper underseal / tar mix, ie it will bubble up and adhere to the car unlike the flat almost spray paint stuff you get in the can?

I guess I couldnt use a normal gun to apply it - after reading the tech note..

Yeah its a bitumen mix by the sound of things.

After re-reading the datasheet I might not get it as It would only be worthwhile for the landrover really and most of that is Aluminium, where this is designed for steel.

Talking to some landrover guys they use a product called waxoyl in the UK (need to find out more about it) and another guy just said he sprays his own mix of grease/oil on it

RunningRich: Yep quite aware that por15 is different, but you can use it for the under body as well (afaik).

^^ Clearly you didn't get enough on your hands

I think a combo of both paints would be good. POR15 on the bare metal areas, then a couple thick layers of the other on top.

I was smart and wore gloves ;) I did that on the underside too, POR15'd then sprayed underseal over the top of it, my floor will never die :D

You could use this product on galv and steel chassis.

http://www.altexcoatings.co.nz/Uploads/ ... ld2000.Pdf

1.25L kit would cost about $50-60 dollars. industrial grade stuff that is used on trucks and ships and stuff like that. it is only made in grey and white.
another product from them that would also work is

http://www.altexcoatings.co.nz/Uploads/Bar-Rust2361.pdf

only available in 5L and 10L kits at about $200 per 5L but it is black.

you maybe able to get a discount from Altex in Auckland by saying that Mark at Altex Dunedin suggested a trade price for you. :P

:D Cheers will keep that in mind. Can the stuff in the 2nd link be used on aluminium? As a protective coating?

Altex make goooooood paint! You do get what you pay for though so as said above it won't be cheap. I used to use their paints when I worked at a freezing works 670 and 990 I think.... ring a bell dirty1? potent shit!

What are you wanting to protect the aluminium against?

Just cos I'm OCD lol

Basically as the Land Rover is completely in parts and has been sitting for about 8 years I want to make sure that the rust protection it was already painted with is sweet. If not I will try protect it as best I can so that I don't need to pull it apart. Previous owner already pulled it down 3 times

the 2nd one bar rust 236 is not recommened for aluminium. for that you would need to use
http://www.altexcoatings.co.nz/Uploads/Devran2011.pdf
$120 for 4L kit

or

http://www.altexcoatings.co.nz/Uploads/AltraEtch.pdf
$27 per Litre (single pack)

both would then need top coated with above mentioned Epoxy coatings
