1991 ST163 - 3S-GE. Turbo maybe?

Postby Bradles » Wed Jan 07, 2009 1:43 pm

So, i have a couple of questions..

firstly, i scored myself one of these the other day, the body needs a little work, but the engine is in great nick, so im quite pleased with it.

How much effort is involved in strapping a turbo onto one of these? are the factory internals reliable? ive been looking at 3S-GTE parts and wondering if i can just swap most of it over.

the other random question i have, is some idiot has cross-threaded the wheel nuts on the left rear hub, not something ive ever had to fix before, can i dismantle the hub and replace the bolts, or do i need something serious like a new hub all together?

just take the brake caliper and disc off, you can knock the threaded studs out, swap them over with new ones. They're about $10 each from memory. Regarding the turbo.. as others will probably say, you'd be best to get a 3SGTE with ECU etc, it would work out to be far cheaper and easier, plus more reliable than turboing the 3SGE.

Yeah, i figured as much..

Are the mounts etc the same as the standard though, or does it take some modification?

Yup. I'm sure someone else could confirm, but the mounts would be quite similar if not the same, although I believe its' dependant on the gearbox used?

Yeah you use the ST16# mounts, PITA part is gearbox. Best solution is an MR2 turbo box with selector reversed.

most tyre places have bucketloads of wheel nuts lying around if you get stuck

the new studs should come with nuts too

Firstly I think you meant to say St183 ?
The manifolds from the 3sgte won't bolt on because the port size is different and even if they did you'd need bigger injectors and an ecu to run it and they run boost unfriendly 10.1:1 compression ratio.
If you really want to turbo the car an ST185 engine and loom will bolt/plug straight in and all you'd need is a gt4 bonnet for the intercooler.

Yes, i meant ST183, sorry.. rushed posts = bad..

So i am going ahead and getting a 3S-GTE engine for it.

On a side note, ive been googling but cant find a fitment chart for wheels on this thing?

Want to know basicly what the biggest wheel i can run on it, without a spacer, is.

Oh also i forgot to ask, will the GTE engine bolt onto the 183 gearbox, or will i need the new engine & box?

A friend once had 18's on a non wide body ST185 so if you find the right offset shouldn't be a problem but 17's are plenty big enough.
your gearbox will bolt straight up to the 3SGTE but if you want something better some of the ST202's came with LSD's (superstrut ones I think)

Would depend on offset I suppose?

I think 17 x 8 fits a caldina sweet, maybe even a bit more width? and I guess the celica setup is roughly the same?

I'd ring around trailor parts suppliers, like trojan etc as I just replaced 4 studs on a trailor which I don't think cost that much.

I can find out where from if needed, but yellow pages ftw.. $18 just seems like a like for whats basically a 12mm bolt

in reguards to turboing a 162/3

the stock internals wont work very well gen1 3sge is prolly up to the tast but has too higher compression.

theres a complete gen1 3sgte on trademe for 1000 dollars.

im not sure on the drive shaft situation. you need st165 front driveshafts to fit an mr2 turbo gearbox.

Yeah not quite that simple unfortunately, Trojan wheel studs are only imperial, and only available in a couple of different sizes.
You'll have to pop one out to measure it up to ring them anyway. If you're in Auckland, try Davie Holden, they sell the Nice brand wheelstuds that Repco sell, you might be able to get them a bit cheaper.
