Painting

Postby solitaire » Mon Jan 12, 2009 7:19 pm

Hiya,

The wife and i are planning the interior of the MR2 we are doing up and we need to decide on what color we will paint the exterior (which is the final part of the project and a good year or so off).

I was going to go with a factory metalic blue or some sort to keep the price down but the wife is keen on a white pearl (which i am rather fond of myself).

How much can i expect to pay for a good respray in a factory color and how much for a good respray in pearl?

Any recomendations of good paint shops in auckland and any things i should look out for when choosing someone to paint our car?

Many Thanks

I wanted to go with a pearl for my mr2. A mate quoted me 1800, with paint and if i did some of the prep. That was mates rates too, so you can expect to pay around 3-4 k for a good pearl paint job! Someone on here might be able to do a perky for you :D

Thanks for your comments guys... can i expect a similiar level of quality on cash jobs? i.e. same chap using his companies facilities over the weekend or is it likely to be some guy doing it in his garage at home?

i guess what im asking is: if i want quality is there any point going down the cashy route? the current paint job has gone all egg shelled (cracked) and i suspect that is a cashy

The guy who does my work does it all in the weekend at his work with spray booth and all. Thats cashy to
Normally he will charge me $1000 for standard colour and 1300-1500 metallic or pearl and thats drive in drive out

Also because it goes all cracked doesnt mean its had a cashy paint job, both my old levin + missus levin did it and both were factory paint job

I had mine done 2 years ago, red mica.

$3800 included some minor panel work (couple of supermarket dings).

Door jambs were going to be extra $300, so I had the colour modified to be closer to stock but with metallic mica added.

Straight factory colour was going to be $3000.

If youre changing colour I would reccomend getting at least the door jambs done, otherwise it looks pretty rude. If your MR2 is white then the pearl white will be best choice, not to mention its an awesome colour :)

having a friend whos a painter allways helps.

if you wanted to to a real mint job get all the pannels off and quarter windows, just strip the entire car and paint everything 8)

I've had a couple of pearl white MR2's on the yard. To be honest I didn't think they were that stunning.
If I remember correctly the pearl paint is astronomically more expensive than other metallics and is a very very difficult to match up if necessary at a later time.

i fail to see the point of of going to all the effort and expense of painting a car if your going to paint it in a "standard" colour.

Who gives a f*ck about the interior? As long as the seat holds you and the steering wheel works!

hmm... I was going to go for the white pearl crystal shine but now me thinks i'll have to reconsider a straight metallic
