general idea of cost for aw11 work?

Postby thornz » Wed Jan 14, 2009 10:49 am

I am currently looking at purchasing a pretty tide Aw11. It has zero rust and is very tidy on the interior and exterior. However it needs some work done to it to bring it up to MINT condition, and was wondering if anyone would be able to give me a rough idea of what it would cost to do so.

Work needed:
-Rev counter and shift light hooked up
-Oil and water temp hoooked up
-exhaust leak fixed
-needs tuning
-one headlight doesnt open (can be done manually for the mean time)
-passenger window doesnt work.

Anyone able to take a stab at the ballpark figure? I realise that without seeing some of the issues first hand it makes it a bit difficult.

Cheers

At a guess 500 for the mechanical/electrical stuff (paying a mechanic/sparky to do it) and do a bit of the work yourself? (like the window)

Also AW11 without rust is bogus

Its a bit vague to be honest. It depends on the extent of each problem. For example, tuning could be as simple as adjusting the dizzy cap, or could require a lot more than that.

Also, if you can't find any rust, it just means you're not looking hard enough!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I am guessing you are trying to get the price knocked down for the repairs?

I would ask whoever your mechanic is and he should be able to give you a decent quote, you might not get that much knocked off the price though.

Did this with the caldina, mechanic was more than happy to inflate his quote with the promise of some work coming his way. Helps taht hes a mate I guess tho lol

I realise its a bit vague, I havent actually seen the car myself, as I am in teh wrong island.

And yeah wanting to try and get the price lowered abit. I could prob have a go at the window and headlight myself, but yeah, no idea about tuning the engine, or hooking up rev counters, oil, water.

With the rust, it had a full strip down do bare metal, rust repairs and new paint job four years ago, so hopefuly still should be pretty sound.

I'd be wary about 'tuning up the engine', as that could be used for something as simple as bad spark plug leads, all the way up to no compression and an engine replacement needed.

The engine runs fine, it just has a high idle speed of around 1500rpm. So i dont htink its anything major.

As i said, once it has those problems it would be aminter. the current owner is living overseas now, so I guess doesnt have the time to get it all fixed.

idleing at 1500rpm seems pretty suspicious, probably a stuffed waxostat and the owner raised the idle to stop it from stalling ?

TBH doesn't sound like a nice aw11 at all to me.

Even my aw11 that i sold for $1000 had less problems than that and most rust taken care of except one on front firewall

It is a 20valve motor if it makes much difference?

Wouldn't buy an aw11 without looking at it tbh.

20valve? engine swapped? Anyhow, sounds like $2k~2.5 would be around the ballpark figure for the car.

even more of a suspect for dodgy swap done wrong, youve got wiring etc to worry about.

yeah that might be a reason why the tacho isnt working then.

Edit: Not sure now, does the tacho get a feed from the ECU on 20v's? I can't remember. Could probably still be wired to -ve coil though [/end ramble]

hmmm, cheer for the advice guys, think I may give it a miss, unless he is willing to fix the majority of it first.
