I was also told that the service dept recommends / puts 15w40 in all GTT's that come in for servicing - i.e. the same stuff that goes in almost every other car they service. I'm surprised they don't try and upsell their customers into 'better' oil, and they recommend the same oil they put in my mothers 1.5l corolla.

Thats cause the majority of people dont know where to put oil in their car, let alone understand viscosity. All they see is someone trying to make them spend more on a product when the one they already use works fine.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting

I'm not so sure; I imagine its just easier / cheaper for Toyota to use one brand / viscosity oil in all cars (either that or oil viscosities make absolutely no difference and this entire thead is a waste of time).

If I took my high performace Toyota whatever, which I just spent a bucketload on purchasing, in for a service and the service guy said they recommend a better oil with all the speal behind it for an extra $20 I'd go for it.
