AE100 Questions :) 20v, suspension etc.

Postby headshotnz » Sun Jan 18, 2009 3:33 am

Hey guys (and girls ;) )

Well i have a AE100 sprinter LX..

Im wanting to put in a 20v engine.

My plan is to buy a wrecked Ae101 at this stage, So i can use the every thing that i need from the engine bay (thus having loom, ecu, tranny etc etc..)

I would also like to use the seats and stuff.

My question's are:

Poer increase? Worth it? I have a 5a-fe 1500cc... its nearly worse then dying. lolz I believe the tourqe is all up aorund 5000rpm though right? (the 20v)

Also,

Ae101 suspension, will that fit into my car? (will go abit more nicer round corners :))

And if so, will the suspension need to be certed?

I believe the engine will need to be certed, although, i cant remember what needs to be done. (cert wise)

Any help, or advice would be great guys :)

Thanks.

For all the hassle I think you would be better to....

Sell your car and buy an ae101 or ae111.

yeah, unless you have some particular attachment to that car, just buy a non-wrecked ae101 :D

but to answer your question, it should all be reasonably easy to fit together if you have a complete car. make sure you get a non super strut ae101. (unless your car is SS, which i doubt)

in theory you will need a cert for the engine, but not for the suspension.

yeah unless you want to do the work for the fun of it, just buy an ae101. they are cheap enough. you shoul dbe able to get a god one for $2500

20vs go ok, have to rev them a bit to get the best out of them, but they arent all dead down low, 2500-4500 is plenty usable.

dont think theres much point changing the suspension over, its the same. just fit new shocks and some good quality springs. if you can get TRD springs use them. but they prob too $$$ so get some TEINs.
fit camber bolts to the front and get front camber set at about 1.25neg and the rear about 0.5 neg. change the brake fluid, and fit good pads, toyota genuine work really good for those.

Cheers man, yeah they would, there 4 x 100.

Yeah ill be doing half the work my self, but will have help from my friends dad. I'm only 17 so yeah.

I'm hoping the levin guards, bumper, bonnet. grill and lights will fit to my car qiute easily.

But i know my car isint what "most" people would modify. But its some thing different untill i can buy a uzz30 or turbo sw20 :)

Any way, if any one has done a engine swap tips would b e great.

I'm sure alot of people can help me (should be the same as swaping a 7a or 4a-fe)

Even more reason to buy a Levin in the first place.... turning your corolla into a levin will be a waste of time money and effort.

Seriously, if you have plans to buy a uzz30 or turbo sw20 (in the future) don't throw money down the drain on this car. Buy a project car if you want to have fun messing around with cars. Something old / cheap to buy / easy to work on and learn from etc.

My 2c. I just hate to see people wasting money when others can advise them of better ways to spend their $$$.

Find a Sprinter Gt model, they are around. Then you've already got the 20v engine, and the sprinter body you like.

Grrrrr  I know your trying to help, but every body says that.

"Buy a levin" "buy a GT" If i wanted one, i would already buy one...

Besides, if i was going to do that, i would probably buy a GT4 st205 or sw20 GT.

Any way, at this stage looks like me and a mate will be doing the labour, and his dad will help us on the tricky part's.

if you ask for advice, dont get in a tizz if you dont like that advice.

what you are trying to do, is effectively convert your car into one of the aforementioned models. hence why we have told you its just cheaper and easier to buy one outright..... as you will get more for your money if you do.

I bought a AE101 20v Levin that was written off due to a crash in the right rear (bent suspension, rooted body)...$400 I think.

I searched for a suitable car to swap all the good bits into...

Found a AE101 4afe Marino that had a seized engine...$650

Transplanted all the good bits, sold excess parts off levin ($200), spent some $ on odds and ends, swapped a supercharger for some wheels, swapped something else for a set of sperstrut disks and calipers, got it certified = $1350! plus the cost of my time and help from Ewan (10k20v) to do the main swap over stuff.
Got some GAB shocks for free off another car I had parted out...
Absolutely loved it!

I'm not saying everything might fall into place with all the deals I made/got but If you aren't in a big rush to buy stuff you will find the "bargain of a lifetime" about every 6 weeks if you look hard enough.

Try to buy a complete donor car - this means you will have every little bracket etc that you need for an easy swap.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

yeah but Ken, you always seem to have all the luck with that stuff!!!

as mentioned by others, value for money/ease of 'upgrading', just buy a 20v levin straight out and put your mags on it. will be a massive save in time/effort/$$$. sure its not your AE100, but meh

have you got any pics of the car to share?

I agree with Ken, I'm doing the 20v into my ae92 at the moment, hasn't cost a lot, a $450 101 donor helped, but its been a lot of fun and I started knowing nothing. Nearing completion, luckily I have a sensible(ish) daily though...
