ok, seriously, ask around mechanics and parts ppl about 1990 onwards mitsubishis
they LOVE them.
coz they make a heap of $$ off them

personally i hate it when ppl ring up fro parts for them.
because mitsi for some stupid reason randomly change parts.
you can have two cars the same year and model. and they will ahve differen shocks, springs, rack ends etc. @$%ing annoying

Really? I've worked with Mitsubishi parts and found the complete opposite - one part can be used in a multitude of models. So long as you know what the chassis number is and what variant of engine it has, you should be right when ordering parts. I know the NZ-new ones can be a bit of a hassle with aftermarket parts places because the chassis codes on them don't conform to any 'standard' like the jap model codes.

I know some places like Repco and Supercheap will have multiple listings of the same model, mainly because they don't put anything in there to distinguish between the types. Try getting a cambelt for a 4G13 at repco, they report there are 5 different types to use for any one year, but the reality is there are about 5 different cambelts in total from the total production run spanning from 1979 until 2008.

I've worked with and on Mitsubishis extensively over the years and I've found them to be quite lego-like, just like Nissans and Toyotas.

yes i know what repcos computers are like! BNTs are similar

but no, im talking about say two liberos
both the same yeah and model
and different front shock/spring combos
RVRs and airtreks like it as well.

nz models tend to be one generation behind jap models.

the one thing i have learned from working in the trade is mitsis are the most troublesome of jap makes.
the only techs i have spoken to that have disagreed with that, are ones whos next line is "but i havnt worked on many"

Oh yeah for sure I'm definitely not saying Mitsubishis are the most reliable cars out there - it's pretty obvious I would be lieing if I said they were. At the end of the day you don't really buy a Mitsubishi for their reliability (not these days anyway). However the same could be said for Subarus, Fiats, Alfas etc and people are still buying them. Why? Because they all have something which appeals to them. For me it's their designs, the sheer fun you get from driving one, and the ability to make them go such much better with a little knowledge and the masses of aftermarket off the shelf go-fast bits for them.

I would say the only reason why Liberos are a bit of a nightmare is because they were produced from 1991 right up until 2005, so there was bound to be some revision of parts, and something superceeding something a few times during the long production. Most of the Libero mechanicals should be solely based on Lancer, but as the Lancer progressed through its many generations while the Libero stayed on the original generation, there would have been some use of the 'parts bin' of the next generation effectively been put into the earlier generation.

NZ-new models aren't one generation behind - there are many models which have been sold here more or less the same time they were available in Japan - before the rest of the world like Australia and America even had them available. NZ-new models tend to be clones of the European spec models in terms of engine choices and trim levels. There are also alot of run-on production going on, for instance L300 vans which were first released in 1986 still being sold new in 2009, 88 shape Lancer/Mirages still being sold up until 1996 along side Lancer/Mirages 2 generations ahead.

when a GDI shits itself, from what ive seen, make sure you got a healthy bank balance :P i hate them personally, a lethargic motor, doesnt go very well, smells funny, not the most reliable out there, i think there a better cars for your money. my 2c

GDI actually means God Damned Idiot, the only type of people who buy and own cars with those engines. The fuel pumps start to wear causing over fueling which results in prematurely worn ring or bores.

The fly by wire unit on those later ones are a hideous problem, i know of a few people who fit an ice cream container over the unit so when they wash their car, no moisture can get any where near the TPS's on that unit, otherwise they act up for a week until they are 110% dry again.

Isn't that a Mitsubishi trait rather than a problem?

from my experience working for in a car yard, all of the GDI suffer from poor idle, poor performance, real bad fuel economy. Combined with transmission problems that half of them start having after 30k, it is just terrible.

Get an odyssey, or an ipsum (stay away from D4/CVT although toyota CVT isn't bad as honda or nissan)... or better get one of those spacios with 4AFE, they drive better than RVRs.

I also sell cars and would never recommend a GDi. The 2.4 litre motor seems to be the worst of the bunch. Have had a number of Chariots and legnums through the yard and god damn if ya dont drive them everyday they choke up and smoke like a choochoo train

Dad works for a mitsi dealer so i have been brought up with mitsi's and in my experience with my current lancer and my previous one i found that the only problems i found in mine was rust in my ex lancer (a common problem for nz new 80's built car lancers) but the rust wasn't actually that bad in it. plus the car got hammered daily - and is still going strong down in the south island. My current lancer which apart from having a little problem with the carb (removed it and cleaned it up etc) seems fine. Plus my family has had mitsi's since early 80's and we have had no major problem to date. (olds had a galant for over 10 years and apart from oil changes or WOF's barely went into the workshop!)

But GDi's are a problem because if they haven't run on the right petrol (need 98) or the right type of oil (to do with hydraulic lifters) things cn go wrong. Also if the fuel system packs up i don't think you can get new stuff for them as i have a feeling that the company that produced it for mitsi went bankrupt or something along those lines..

I think it often comes down to people buying crap cars then wondering why they are having problems.

nah that shape never had the GDI engine, only 1.8L and 2L (turbo or N/A) engines, so it's a more reliable model. The only general thing which goes wrong with that shape is automatic transmissions on 4WD models, and the usual hydraulic lifter tick and idle stepper motor surge problem

the RVR with GDI 1.8 or 2.4 looks like this:

My work car is a 1.8L GDI lancer.
Company purchased it with 22 tho on the clock, and the first fortnight we had it the office lady was complaining how uneconomic it was, so I thought I’d take a look. It was leaking fuel! It’s now got 68 tho on the clock, and the GDI eco light in the dash doesn’t work, and I can hear the hydraulic lifters tapping away.
Go the CVT tiptronic auto…..

The older chariots, well anything with the older motor 1.8 in them also has issues with oil leaks out of the head.

that's only for the early 4G9x series of motor, so from about 1991 onwards, which also affected Lancers and Mirages with 4G91, 4G92, 4G93 etc. The older 1.8 4G37s or 4G62s didn't have that issue.

Well, misses got the car tues day last week. we've driven thruogh rotorua up to taurunga, then up to kaitaia (an hour south of falling off the north island). So far have no major complants about it other than tad gutless, and auto gear change jumps round a bit. Can hear the lifters, exspesialy when cold. its the shap as fuel has posted. If the engine/fuel systems fails il see if i can fit something like a 4age in it.
