4agze - ECU/Temp sender broken?

Postby shazeal » Wed Jan 21, 2009 4:35 pm

Over the past few days the car has been acting odd, I would stop and leave it for 10-15mins then when I came back the temp guage would fly off to the right and the car would not start, after leaving it with IGN on for a minute, try cranking again and it was fine as the temp needle had gone back down.

Now today the car started cutting out while driving, but would only cut out for 0.5-1s then keep going only when RPM > 2k. I checked error codes and error 11 came up, BGB says its Temp loss of voltage to ECU.

So I did what the BGB said and checked all the relays/links/fuses. Tested Solenoids, cleaned up earths etc. Then when I was warming up the engine to test the Oxy sensor at ~3k rpm the engine cut completely but the main fan stayed on, temp guage shot to the right and wont go down. I had to pull the 15A EFI fuse to get the main radiator fan to turn off!

So is this just a simple Temp sender is buggered, could the ECU faulty or is it more likely an earth somewhere I am unaware of?

it looks like loose ground, there are couple of ground point to look at, one behind manifold, another one next to thermostat housing and another one on the metal frame/centre console not far away from ecu (inside the car).

I checked the engine ones. I actually have no idea where the ECU is, from the 4age manual it seems like its right up the top under the dash above the centre console?
Is there an easy way to get to it? Or do I have to remove everything?

Ok I just went mental and removed everything. Finally found it, there is only one earth in the area... and its disconected!! Possibly came out when I was pulling stuff off, but Im not sure.

Edit: Not relevant, removed the pics.

Nope, pulled off some more bits and found 2 more earths, cleaned them all up, even connected the black one to another earth.
Car now refuses to start at all, starter is cranking, battery is at 12.8v , fan comes on until I unplug the EFI fuse, no diagnositic codes when the wire is plugged in for diagnostics.

Bricked ECU?

Tested connector W on ECU to earth and the engine check light comes on, tested continuity of E1 earth on ECU and it checks out.

Car will turn over and attempt to start on occasion but will not run. The fan issue was unrelated, the connector was dirty, removed it and resoldered the connection and now the fan no longer comes on and stays on.

Checked the relays again, all fine. Really looks like bad ECU :?

Well Ive tested just about everything I can think of. It has fuel and spark, engine is cranking. So Ive got it booked in with a sparky tomorrow, see if he can make heads or tails if Its something Ive overlooked.

So, you have spark, and you have fuel (I assume you have tested if fuel pump running when you crank?) if it does not start, it either due to no compression/wrong timing, or fouled plugs.

Timing is fine, i literally set it the day before this happened since I replaced the CAS seal. Compression is 160 across the board. Plugs are better than Ive ever seen them. Makes me want to scream :o
And yep I checked the pump circuit, it all checks out fine, runs etc. Ive pretty much checked everything I can think of, and everything the manual says to check.

The engine check light is not comming on, nor does the diagnostics work so I really dont think its something mechanical. Its acting like something is shorted, just before I was rechecking the earths when I knocked the inlet tube by accident the radiator fan turned on... with the ignition off!

Just did earlier, Ive worked with computers for ages and used to do a bit of repair/modification to computer parts, it was fine. Capacitors all checked out, unless one of the chips is damaged theres nothing wrong with it.

Just before another strange thing happened also, I was just screwing the gear knob back on since Im going to tow it down to the garage tomorrow when the alarm armed itself, then proceeded to go off... The disarm button on the keyring just disarmed then instantly rearmed it and the alarm did not stop, had to pull the battery... I think my car is alive
