4agze q's

Postby redline racer » Wed Jan 14, 2009 8:14 pm

Im looking at buying a 4agze powered toyota of some description, I have never had a 4agze bt have had both 16&20v 4ages's,can i expect the same hassle free turn key reliability from a gze? Are there any common problems? what is standard boost level and level with a pulley kit? are the superchargers maintaince free? Are they similar to their N/A brother in the amount of kms before needing to be opened up/rebuilt etc?

any help/advice appreciated

cheers 8)

Go fine and have very few issues. The superchargers have an oil level dipstick which has probably never been checked. The superchargers do get noisy if they're on the way out/abused/no oil etc.

As for kms, much like any other 4A. I had one with 290,000kms on it and was still going fine

Boost levels stadard are from 6-8psi. With the pulley kit it depends which one you get but can go up to about 13-14psi. If its a MAP sensored version then you'll get boost cut at 15psi anyway. Getting up this sort of boost level on the supercharger is the limit you'd want to go before betting a bigger blower or going turbo

great reliable engines,
worth checking the super charger, make sure it has oil in in and its clean not black, and the front pulley on the s/c is not loose

standard boost is 8psi, biggest pulley kit i do is upto 14psi,

map gze's have a 1 bar boost cut,

Only problem Ive had with mine was some cheap bugger putting one of those cheap trademe 4age/4agze gasket sets on it. Which resulted in me having to replace the head gasket and get the valve/valve seats machined to remove the large dents where the 1cm worth of gasket made its escape. Otherwise for 205k kms the internals were pretty mint.

As for the S/C itself, I completely drained the oil while it was out, and Id say if it has not been done before its almost a must to drain it. The amount of crap around the magnetic plug was disturbing.

cheers for the replies.

is there any difference between ae92 and 101 motors? is one afm and one map sensor? is one preferable over the other?

Is the supercharger oil straight foward to change without having to remove any components from the engine?

Depends who you ask on which engine to take. From memory the AFM ones are bigport and don't have the boost cut that the MAP sensor ones do. However, bigport doesn't always mean better than smallport anyway.

Most AE92s are the AFM ones, with the later AE92s and AE101s getting the MAP sensored version.

Thought there was a difference in compression and boost levels (101 uses smaller s/c pulley?)
