Cabin Fan, and how it controls the speed?

Postby beeker » Sat Jan 31, 2009 6:19 pm

In my AE86 Levin, i'm replacing the std cabin fan box with an generic fan (had too, as roll cage had to go though the factory location).

Anyway, my question is how does the dash Fan Speed selector (4 locations, off, low, med, high) control the fan speed? From a quick multimeter test at the fan, its provides full 12v to the fan motor at any dash fan speed selection.

there should be a box that has three (iirc) different coils. The selector chooses which coil(s) is(are) run. I assume they are just resistance coils.

yea the selector switch just selects different resistors, which are in the air flow for cooling.

the best way to control a fan though would be with a motor speed controller kit from jaycar.

it uses PWM so is much more efficient and doesn't need forced cooling.

Do you think there is any technical reason why i cant use a 12v Marine Air ventilation fan (designed for engine space ventilation 4" in/outlet), which has a 4.5A draw. And wire this up to the OEM Fan speed switch. A quick test shows that it works, and even varies the speed.

Just keen to check if there is anything i've overlooked ?
