this is slightly worrying wording as it could have a very broad interpretation of what justifies an offence, and the penalties they are talking about seem very harsh for what could be a relatively minor event...
i fail to understand why new laws need to be passed. there are plenty of existing laws that cater for such behaviour. it's the Gov't way of 'soft-cokking' the situation so constituants believe something is being done.
a simple change of penalties would suffice.

There are no true enthusiasts left in the Christchurch cruise scene, we all got out years ago when these troublesome posers took over.

More laws isn't the answer, more effective policing of the current ones is. Fill the city with Police cars Friday and Saturday night. Put a checkpoint on Bealey Ave trap all the rats in there and search every car, throw the book at them. They're breaking more than just road laws, there's underage drinking, breach of liquor ban, and I bet a whole heap of non-association orders and curfews.
It will cost a lot, will require a helluva lot of Police and some temporary cells but I see it as the only way.
Also they need to do this every weekend until the problem is on the decline, not just one weekend.

Thats not a half bad idea tbh.... more cops = less munters. The point is though, it shouldnt have come to this.

Glad my car, although modified, looks stock.

I know taupo was in a smaller, simallar way only a year or so ago. but it was death instead of riots that were the consern, they tryed setting up a car club for the liget car lovers, and they tryed to set up cheep track days. Don't know if its worked or not, moved not to long after.

the blue mk3 aye? he didnt do anybody any favours.

I sold my modified car so it doesnt matter to me anymore, the next car i buy will be something worth quite a bit more money, and quite a bit more capable in stock form.

I do agree with loss of license if you don't pay your fines, as obviously fines don't work in that instance.

+1 for chucking loads of resources onto the problem until it subsides. then when it eventually reemerges again later on hammer it again. eventually itll be just too hard for everyone except the extremely stupid/hardcore , and even then there will be noone left for those idiots to show off for.

problem = some boy racers are retards
problem 2= media hype the backlash from the retard boy racers goes to far ie crush their cars and leads to tougher laws on all car lovers etc

solution= well a slower well thought out solution not 1 thats rushed through government using media hype fueled from boy racer extremists.

real solution= revhead for dictatorship!

Yea I have beef with the lawmakers but the dumbass boy racers dont know the difference between cops and law makers.

It's just that I have had cops swear at me and abuse when I've done hardly anything wrong and where I would take it some people hold it against the cops until repeated occasions cause them to round up their mates and retaliate.

Good to see my car shown again to represent a problem nearly 500kms away

What ive done in that car is no worse than Freddy Fat $&#$% in his HSV, but because Im driving a car with half the cylinders and twice the power to weight, Im public enemy number one, The media, the public, and especially the police cant tell the difference between me, and some munter in their $500 dx dumping diesel everywhere so they can single spin their way into some skanks pants. So I get harrased and scrutinised like a criminal.

The Gold Coast, especially Surfers Paradise, had a major boy racer problem. All they did to stop it was declare war on the boy racers. They pulled up EVERY modified car they saw, and eventually the d*ckheads got the message. I thought Surfers would be crawling with modified cars, but i lived there for over a year and hardly ever saw any people racing, skidding, or car loads of idiots in cut spring/chromed up cars causing sh*t.

I guess NZ doesn't have the money that Australia does, so something like this is a big ask and a massive drain on police resources. Damned if you do and damned it you don't it seems. There's always more legislation, and National will be the ones to implement something that will have some affect I reckon. Isn't it down to the individual police stations as well though?

Spot on, the media will blow the whole thing up so the public demand the govt do something. Actually fixing the problem is too much like hard work however for our simple politicians so they'll come up with some cleverly worded law that makes it look like they've done something. Meanwhile cops and true enthusiasts suffer for it. And the public never realise the law was there the whole time "assault of a police officer with a deadly weapon" what's crushing an easily replaceable car compared to serious jailtime?

How about we send all the politicians, boyracers and the media to live on an island away from the rest of us? They were made for each other.

Hmmm I think we have the answer to several problems of late.... AOS need live target practice, and we have too many munters in CHCH... simple solution really

Also on the news was a TT doing the burnout while having 2 people holding onto the rear spoiler.

I think a good solution is to have a CC rating on your license.

So for example Learners nothing over 1.6 litres NA and make the period between learners and restricted 2 years and anther 2 from restricted to Full also if only holding a Restricted nothing over 2000 cc again NA also up the driving start out age to 18 or something along those lines 15 is just to young for kids to rock up in highly modded powerful cars to sit there learners I think we all no this common sense has to play apart here and I personally think the govt. have done JACK over the years to address this problem and hence we have all these boy racer type issues.

things started to go down hill when that fatty jenny shipley(sp) lowed the drinking age.

and agree with the age of learner should be 18. i work next to the AA and the number of KIDS coming to do there test is just  so immature and dumb.
if you need your mummy to hold your hand when your going for your license then your too young!! i stopped counting the times i've seen kids come out almost crying because they failed :D what the hell!!!

lol really? I was in surfers for four days and saw TONS. Although there was certainly a higher nicely modified to ghetto styles ratio, still had VROOOM PSISH through the cbd all night every night...

The two cars I learned to drive in were both 2L, and I didn't manage to crash in either of them. If you're a muppet you're going to crash or whatever regardless of how powerful the car you're driving is.

Not only that, but there are plenty of quick small cars available.
That rule would quickly cause a "where do we draw the line" problem. You see plenty of idiots in starlets/civics/corollas. I presently have a 4L car, a 2L car and a 1.6L car, and the 4L is by far the slowest and least "boy racerish". The only way I can think to make that work is to specify individual models that are allowable for learners, and stipulate that no modification of them is allowed.
