What needs doing at 200k on an st205?

Postby ihavelift » Sun Feb 01, 2009 9:01 pm

Hey guys, picking up my gt4 tomorrow morning  it's done 200k and needs the cambelt done, a mate who was a mechanic told me that it also needs tensioners, hydraulic and water pump done as well.

Does anybody know where I can go to get it done well and cheaply? ie a place that do a lot of st205's?

Also, is there anything else I should get looked at? (I'm assuming CV boots and shocks)

cheers

EDIT: sorry if it's in the wrong section, didn't know whether to put in technical car stuff or here

I would flush and change coolant and transmission/diff fluids for good measure too. you can't assume the previous owners have changed these regularly.

also seeing as its a 3SGTE check out the cam cover gaskets and look for oil leaks around there. its pretty common and relatively easy to fix, although you'll probly never fix all the leaks.

Bits that need replacement at 200k
1) Cam belt department
cam seals
crank seal
oil pump seal
water pump
thermostat
cam belt roller(s?)
cam belt tensioner
cam belt
coolant
2) Cam cover/ignition department
cam cover seal
spark plug tube seals
leads
rotor
distributor cap
spark plugs
oil and filter change
3)Drive train
if leaking:
drive shaft seals (3x)
differential seals (3x, one of them is tricky)
oil changes
4) Brakes
Check weather boots on the calliper pistons, if worn out or torn, get seal kit and replace them as well as piston seals (also check the rust inside of the calliper)
Bleed, bleed and bleed
5) Bleed clutch
6) Replace Fuel filter
7) wash out intercooler and replace the coolant in it.
Most of these thing could be a lot easier if you are going to do a clutch on it, as the engine will come out and that will save tens of hours
If you are going to do a clutch replacement, replace the rear crank seal and input shaft seal on the gearbox.

For many people these things look over the board, but that is how I do my every 100k service.

AT 200k (especially if you have the engine out) I'd also consider replacing the oil cooler hoses.

May be a good time to checks the distibutor seals and replace the internal lip seal.

Why? It's only just run in!

The stuff listed are all normal maintenance items really and would be no different on any other car. Spend the money to do it properly and the car would happily run to 300000kms with just regular oil changes.

Yep thats a good list, pretty much everything Ive done to my 3SGTE, now running happy at 220,000 kms.

Once youve got all that done its just fresh fluids and filters all the way to 300K.

Where's the best place to get it done and what's a rough cost guide?

I am now the proud owner of an st205 by the way ... pics to come!

Download the manual, buy a few tools, buy a dozen beers to bribe your mates to help and get stuck in. A GT-Four i one of those cars that it helps to be able to at least do some things yourself, otherwise you better have deep pockets as mechanics will rape you.

I'd also have a look at all the superstrut knuckles as well. Either it's had work or it most certainly needs work.

i have a 99 corolla with 225k's on it and done none of the above except sparkplugs and gearbox oil.

i have been thinking about doing fuel filter and a few other bits and pieces but not quite a list that long!!! i'm sure doing all those bits will lead to much more trouble free motoring.

The point is that if you do that you don't have to do it one at a time within next 50k, that would be more expensive and inconvenient.
Yeah I forgot about superstrut, but that is the most obvious on a ST205, besides if it is worn it will fail the WOF and he will have to do it anyway.

Alot of the stuff you can do yourself with little or no mechanical knowledge.

- Oil change + filter
- Air filter
- Spark PLugs
- HT Leads
- Electrical

I do all the above, for anything else find a reputable mechanic \ garage (not necessarily Toyota dealer).

sweet ... i reckon a box o' beers with the boys and a weekend will sort that out. Have a mate who's a mechanic so reckon it'll be sweet.

For the stuff we won't be doing, however (superstrut knuckles i guess) where should i go to get it done?

ihavelift - if you have a mate who is a mechanic why not tackle the SS parts at the same time?

I'm not familiar with the ST205 set up but on the AE101 I have it was a piece of cake, couple of bolts and swap parts over.

I would imagine if you & your mate did it it would save a truck load in labour costs at a garage :)

I heard they take a long time to do? ... must've heard wrong ... I'll have a word with him and see what we can do.

225 KM here - 16-18PSI daily , never had the engine open .. Regular servicing makes these chug along happily at stock boost levels all day every day

Sergeis list is a good start to follow :)
