20v Silvertop, performance mods?

Postby headshotnz » Thu Feb 05, 2009 1:42 am

Hey guys,

So iv recently brought an AE101, and selling my car old car soon.

What are some of the first things to do to a silvertop to gain some more power? (and mabey some midrange back.. )

Already have an exhaust from the plexi back, and dont metion a pod filter.. lolz.

Would headers make a good increase?

Cheers guys.

(oh and budget 1500-2000)

Blacktop extractors and remake the section under the motor (and over the cross member). Have a look at affroman's build in members projects.

An enginer is doing the exhaust in the next day or so.

Will take pics, hes taking out the muffler and cat and putting a coby there.

Already has a 2.5" exhaust down the middle.

Will let the enginer sort it out :D He knows what he is doing :)

He has a muffler to put on it. came off some race car that he built a while back.

Will try get some more info.

Put a good chambered muffler (turbo flow) on it and a resonator or two. Or buy another cat for it.
2 1/2 inch is too big. 2 1/4 is the way to go.

yup the exhaust on my gtz consisted of 2 resonators, an rps muffler and 2.25 inch piping. was really good apart from the volume, do not get rps mufflers, with the limits these days you wont pass wofs! mine was WAY over the limit according to the wof inspector. the idea of a turbo flow one is good, that is what is on mine now. its quiter but still has a good note, but they are nothing pretty to look at unless u get a chrome tip i guess...i didnt

Yup my 60mm exhaust is only just under allowed average db (spiked to 92db on throttle lift off) and that has two resonators and a turbo flow muffler with only a 60mm tip.

I bought myself a high flow catalytic converter (Magnaflow) and a rather large turbo flow muffler (Dynomax Super Turbo) when I was in Texas (cheap cheap 8) ). I'll be using those on my blacktop, along with some second hand FGK headers a Powerpro rear muffler fart cannon type thing. That'll be mainly for looks and because I already had it. The whole system will be 2 1/4 inch.

I've done a little bit of research about those Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers and they apparently flow better than Flowmaster chambered mufflers. The only problem is they are quite expensive or hard to find here.

If you want second hand, I've heard good things about the standard HSV mufflers..

Also, I've heard the HSV cats are quite good.

Seeing as they will eventually be required legally, why not get one now? Beat the rush hahaha.

Was talking to a guy today, he said he put a black top head on with some 1jz injectors, from memory.

How much work for this stuff, and would it be worth it??

Ummmm, no.
Either leave the head, or swap in a complete Blacktop engine.

blacktop rods have a bit of a reputation for breaking with little provocation. supposedly blacktop heads flow a little better than the ST, and have larger throttle bodies - dont know why you would bother with the JZ injectors unless you were strapping a turbo on as well.

dunno what benefit you would see from just swapping the head - i think most of the gains on the blacktop come from lighter internals, higher compression and lack of AFM :)

If you look hard, you might be able to find a TOMS airbox and trumpets. They're good for some more power.

The Blacktop head has different cams and different amount of cam movement with VVT activation, different throttles, MAP not AFM, higher compression, so no point just slapping a Blacktop head on it and away you go.

It might be ok if you used a Link or similar to tune it. In that case, you'd be better off going for the full Blacktop motor, chuck in some Silvertop rods and some bigger cams while you're there and tune her up. I'd say well out of your budget of $1500-2000.

There is nothing wrong with a Silvertop as they are. Gains can be had with intake and exhaust (Also put a good oil catch can on it.) Just do it properly and not just a pod and 2.5 inch exhaust. Also, I've seen a Silvertop tuned on a dyno make good gains by adjusting the AFM and timing. It could have been that they had been mucked with prior, or that there is a gain to be had form stock. Not really something to just tinker around with without the right gear though. Run it on 98 as well as do the exhaust and intake then take it for a quick run on the dyno to check to see if you can run more timing advance and the A/F ratios is all within your budget.

Do you have a decent cold air intake setup for the pod filter?

Had pod on for about 2 days? Made really no difference to the sound because of AFM (im assuming) so replaced it with the standered air box, but i need to buy a high flow panel filter.
